What Can Cognitive Load and Processing Fluency Tell Us About Difficult Processing
This experiment investigated the impacts of difficult processing in the context of a health narrative by integrating two distinct literatures: cognitive load and processing fluency. Difficult processing was manipulated via an auditory cue induction of reactive cognitive control (a manipulation of cognitive load) and language difficulty (a manipulation of processing fluency). We examined whether cognitive load can impact persuasion-relevant outcom…
Empowered by the Experience: Playing as Female Characters in Video Games
Research on female video game characters often investigates negative outcomes of playing as stereotyped characters. Yet, video games increasingly offer people opportunities to play as capable, prominent female characters that may be meaningful and promote positive outcomes (e.g., feelings of empowerment). This manuscript shares the results of a mixed methods survey of individuals ( N = 751) recruited via online forums who recalled their experienc…
The Effects of Side-Taking on Narrative Entertainment and the Perceptions of Events and Characters
Media psychologists commonly study how narrative elements (e.g. characters) influence entertainment and perceptions. Research on the sequencing and structure of these elements (i.e. metanarrative; the shape of the story) is less common. In both areas, morality tends to ground theorizing (e.g. disposition theory). To extend knowledge in these domains, we conceptualize and observe the effects of side-taking (i.e. choosing a side during conflict), a…
Examining How Sex Appeal Cues and Strength Cues Influence Impressions of Female Video Game Characters
Sexualization is a prominently studied dimension of how media content contributes to problematic outcomes for women (e.g., self-objectification). In video game contexts, scholars have debated whether portrayals of powerful characters may disrupt undesirable outcomes of sexual objectification. In two studies, we experimentally manipulated sex appeal cues and strength cues in female characters. Participants reported their impressions in terms of ke…
Evidence of Ambivalent Sexism in Female Video Game Character Designs
This report shares the results of a systematic, quantitative analysis of themes resonant with ambivalent sexism in playable female video game characters.Applying principles of ambivalent sexism's underlying concepts of paternalism, compulsory heterosexuality, and gender differentiation, we developed a coding scheme for assessing themes in character personalities, stories, and other aspects of their characterizations. We sampled games developed in …
(Men)tal health: Perceptions of depression in men and women
Despite evidence indicating that depression is prevalent in men, gender stereotypes persist that position the disorder as feminine. This misperception may contribute to men's underdiagnosis with and undertreatment for depression. We applied the shifting standards model (SSM) to advance predictions about gender differences in the evaluation of individuals described as experiencing depression. These predictions took the form of objective and subjec…
Formidability of male video game characters over 45 years
Guided by biological and cultural perspectives, this work examines the formidability of male characters in video games released between 1974 and 2018 (n = 702). Formidability (e.g., size, strength) has served an essential function in the evolution of humans, especially for males. Alongside this evolution, cultural practices have long centralized formidability by celebrating it as a signal of masculinity. We review this biocultural phenomenon and …
Counter-stereotypical, yet Counterproductive? How Families at a Science Museum Respond to Narratives that Defy Gender Stereotypes
While visiting a science museum, mothers (N = 125) and their 4- to 7-year-old children were recruited to read one of four versions of an educational storybook. These storybooks detailed either male-dominated careers (i.e., STEM: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) or female-dominated careers (i.e., HEED: health, early education, and domestic roles), and they featured either a male protagonist or a female protagonist. Results indica…
Discourse of Gaming: A Conceptual Framework of Gaming as an Interpretive Community
Situating gaming as a cultural practice aimed at con-structing issues of power through cultural discussions necessitates a framework of discourse of gaming to explain how meanings around gaming practice develop. Built on the premise that gaming offers mul-timodal opportunities for interaction, we introduce the discourse of gaming framework to connect pro-cesses of boundary work, definition making, and legit-imization to the activities of gaming, …
Hegel, Islam and liberalism: Religion and the shape of world history
Hegel’s philosophy is in tension with liberalism, containing both liberalizing tendencies and rejecting liberal norms. I explore this tension by investigating the relationship between religion, fanaticism and world history in Hegel’s discussion of Islam. Drawing on recent work that considers Hegel’s treatment of race and world history, I show that he views Islam as a form of fanaticism that is antithetical to Christian Europe. This rejection of I…
Kawaii Killers and Femme Fatales: A Textual Analysis of Female Characters Signifying Benevolent and Hostile Sexism in Video Games
Game developers potentially convey socio-cultural values about gender through design choices. This study interpreted the designs of 11 purposively selected female game characters, developed by studios located in the United States and Japan, through the lens of ambivalent sexism. This social psychological theory posits that sexism consists of hostile and benevolent attitudes about women. Two themes emerged across characterizations: bodies as objec…
Epistemic injustice and the veil: Islam, vulnerability, and the task of historical revisionism
Academic work on the “veil”, while important in challenging commonly held ideas about Islam and gender, often falls into a familiar series of observations: veiled women are frequently excluded from these debates; women’s bodies and sexuality have become (or rather, taken on new significance as) battle grounds in arguments about national identity, religion, and culture; and the veil not only marks religious identity, but plays a role in the racial…
Translating Deaf Culture: An Ethnodrama
This ethnodrama is a script writing project based on qualitative research that explores deaf people's experience of working as interpreter in Ireland. A collection of interview data was used to develop the ethnodrama by constructing scenes that reveal a series of interactive moments that capture the challenges faced by deaf interpreters. Framed within Sontag's (1997) conceptualization of "translation," the authors offer a critique of the term tra…
Apocalyptic Political Theology: Hegel, Taubes and Malabou
Hegel's philosophy of religion contains an implicit political theology. When viewed in connection with his wider work on subjectivity, history and politics, this political theology is a resource for apocalyptic thinking. In a world of climate change, inequality, oppressive gender roles and racism, Hegel can be used to theorise the hope found in the end of that world. Histories of apocalyptic thinking draw a line connecting the medieval prophet Jo…
What the Public “Knows” About Media Effects Research: The Influence of News Frames on Perceived Credibility and Belief Change
News articles about media effects research were presented to 333 participants to experimentally test the effects of three independent variables on perceived credibility of both the journalist and featured scientist: whether the sources in the news story supported or contradicted the findings of the featured scientist, journalist gender, and whether the story matched or mismatched preexisting beliefs about the link between media exposure and subse…

Transcendental Materialism as a Theoretical Orientation to the Study of Religion
Transcendental materialism is a philosophical perspective that uses German Idealism, Marxism, psychoanalysis and natural science to offer a materialist account of subjectivity and culture. This essay compares this philosophical framework with recent work in the study of religion (Manuel Vásquez) and philosophy of religion (Kevin Schilbrack and Thomas A. Lewis). While transcendental materialism has until now been unconcerned with religion, it offe…
Social construction and social critique: Haslanger, race, and the study of religion
Recent critiques of the category religion discuss the category as socially constructed, but the nature of this social construction remains underdeveloped. The work of Sally Haslanger can supplement existing discussions of "religion" while also offering a new perspective on the connection between social construction and social critique. Her analysis of race provides resources for developing a philosophical account of the social construction of rel…
Sexy, Strong, and Secondary: A Content Analysis of Female Characters in Video Games across 31 Years
We analyzed in-game content from titles released between 1983 and 2014 (n = 571) featuring playable female characters. Results indicate that sexualization has diminished since an observed height in the 1990s. Traditionally male-oriented genres (e.g. fighting) have more sexualized characters than role-playing games. Games rated Teen or Mature did not differ in sexualization and featured more sexualization than Everyone games. Despite an increase i…
Better everyone should know our business than we lose our house”: Costs and benefits of medical crowdfunding for support, privacy, and identity
In the United States, medical crowdfunding is an increasingly common response to overwhelming healthcare costs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 individuals crowdfunding for health (e.g. cancer, paralysis, brain injury) on behalf of themselves or others, to better understand this new phenomenon as it informs theory on social support, identity, and privacy. First, findings suggest that crowdfunding is often a resource for both ins…
Forum: Where the Machine Stops: Software as Reader and the Rise of New Literatures
Technology is a ubiquitous part of our everyday lives in and out of schools, yet it escapes the sustained scrutiny of education researchers who contribute to the wider “orthodoxy of optimism” (Selwyn, 2014) accompanying all things technological. Challenging such orthodoxy begins with greater precision in language, replacing the broadness of technology with the more accurate specificity of software (Kitchin & Dodge, 2011). This essay conceptually …
I've Heard That Before: Habituation of the Orienting Response Follows Repeated Presentation of Auditory Structural Features in Radio
Research has used the cardiac orienting response (OR) to show that structural changes in the auditory environment cause people to briefly but automatically pay attention to messages such as radio broadcasts, podcasts, and web streaming. The voice change—an example of an auditory structural feature—elicits orienting across multiple repetitions. This article reports two experiments designed to investigate whether automatic attention allocation to r…
Technology-Push or User-Pull? The Slow Death of the Transfer-of-Technology Approach to Intelligent Support Systems Development
This chapter describes a study of the adoption of intelligent support systems in agriculture. The aim was to investigate the apparent low uptake of these systems and the approaches used in development–whether ‘user-pull’ or ‘technology-push.’ Data was collected for 66 systems, mainly through telephone interviews. An interpretative approach to research was adopted. The nature of user influence in the development process and the nature of the outco…
