  • White-Collar Opt-Out: How "Good Jobs" Fail Elite Workers

    Open Access•Mustafa Yavaş•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 54

Why do elite professionals leave hard-earned, privileged corporate careers? This article examines an underappreciated case of employee turnover, white-collar opt-out, which involves resignations that may not immediately lead to a similar job or life experience, but are instead followed by alternatives to fast-track careers, including seeking another occupation, stay-at-home parenting, or pursuit of leisure and self-exploration. Competition for dominance in the public sphere is reflected in social media which become sites of contestation, showcasing antagonistic claims of leg…

  • Dissecting income segregation: Impacts of concentrated affluence on segregation of poverty

    Mustafa Yavaş•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 12

This article investigates how income inequality shapes residential segregation by income. Using agent-based modeling, it develops a residential preferences model that is capable of generating results mimicking empirical income segregation patterns. Simulation analysis shows how varying income inequality produces differential residential mobility outcomes that alter income segregation profiles. The model is used to capture the distinct impacts of …

  • Impact of Homophily on Diffusion Dynamics Over Social Networks

    Open Access•Mustafa Yavaş, Gönenç Yücel•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 15

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of homophily on diffusion over social networks. An agent-based simulation model is developed to serve as the experimental ground for this analysis. Diffusion dynamics of a nonsticky innovation is investigated by varying homophily levels in the social network depicted in the model as the primary control variable. First of all, the results show that homophily is self-reinforcing. Second, starting f…
