Open Access•J C Mitani, Toshikazu Hasegawa et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1992

Chimpanzees emit a loud, species‐typical long distance call known as the pant hoot. Geographic variation between the pant hoots of chimpanzees living in two neighboring populations, the Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream National Parks, Tanzania, was examined. Analysis of six acoustic features revealed subtle differences in the way chimpanzees from the two populations called. Individuals from the Mahale study site uttered one section of their pant…

  • Monkey Responses to Three Different Alarm Calls

    Open Access•Noah Snyder‐mackler, Robert M Seyfarth et al.•ARTICLE•Science•1980

Vervet monkeys give different alarm calls to different predators. Recordings of the alarms played back when predators were absent caused the monkeys to run into trees for leopard alarms, look up for eagle alarms, and look down for snake alarms. Adults call primarily to leopards, martial eagles, and pythons, but infants give leopard alarms to various mammals, eagle alarms to many birds, and snake alarms to various snakelike objects. Predator class…
