The effects of Covid-19 on reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and child health service provision and utilisation
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted country health systems and necessitated urgent actions to offset its effects on service provision, especially for vulnerable populations such as mothers and children. We aimed to analyse the experiences of healthcare workers in Burkina Faso and Mozambique, and the perceived effects of COVID-19 on reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) service provision and utilisation. Methods: We con…
Understanding health innovation adoption
INTRODUCTION: Hypoxaemia is an important contributor to child mortality, particularly in low-resource settings where diagnostic tools are scarce. The Améliorer l'Identification des détresses Respiratoires chez l'Enfant project introduced pulse oximeters (POs) into 202 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger, integrating them into the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness guidelines. This initiative aimed to …
Acceptability of the routine use of pulse oximetry by healthcare workers and caregivers within primary healthcare in West Africa
INTRODUCTION: To better identify severe hypoxaemia as a major risk factor for specific illnesses in children aged under 5 years, the Améliorer l'Identification des détresses Respiratoires chez l'Enfant (AIRE) project implemented routine use of pulse oximetry within implementation of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines at primary health centres (PHCs) in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger. We aimed to measure and underst…
The evolution of facility-based deliveries at primary healthcare centres during an insecurity and conflict crisis in Burkina Faso
This research provides crucial insights for strengthening Burkina Faso's health system resilience to conflict by spatially identifying how facility characteristics and geo-spatial determinants shape healthcare disruptions. Mapping these elements at a fine scale enables adaptive policy interventions and dynamic resource allocation based on evolving conflict dynamics, enhancing obstetric care during conflict. By integrating the applied geospatial m…
Intervention co-design to reduce the impact of heat exposure on pregnant and postpartum women and newborns in Burkina Faso
Interventions are needed to reduce the impact of heat on the health and wellbeing of women and newborns in Burkina Faso where seasonal temperatures can be extremely high. In this article, we share our experience and lessons learned from co-designing an intervention to improve maternal and neonatal health, about heat in a rural and an urban district of Burkina Faso. We performed community engagement and a series of workshops with 49 community memb…
The role of trust in engaging community-based task forces and agencies among minoritized communities during a public health emergency
Community leaders play an instrumental role in establishing and sustaining trust in vaccine promotion among community members. Trust established among community leaders and ambassadors enabled vaccine promotion efforts among minoritized communities. These findings may help to further strengthen community engagement for future public health emergency responses
Extreme heat, pregnancy and women’s well-being in Burkina Faso
Climate change is an increasing threat to the health of populations in Africa, with a shift in seasonal temperatures towards more extreme heat exposures. In Burkina Faso, like other countries in the Sahel, many women have little protection against exposure to high temperatures, either outside or inside the home or place of work. This paper investigates how women perceive the impacts of heat on their physical and mental health, in addition to thei…
How have Ontario Public Health units engaged with faith-based organizations to build confidence in Covid-19 vaccines among ethno-racial communities
In Ontario, collaborations between Public Health Units (PHUs) and faith-based organizations (FBOs) and other community organizations were implemented to deliver interventions aimed at building trust in vaccines among ethnoracial communities. This research sought to explore the processes of PHU engagement with FBOs, and challenges encountered. A qualitative research study based on in-depth interviews was conducted with 18 of the 34 Ontario PHUs wh…
Implementation of lockdown, quarantine, and isolation measures in the context of Covid-19 among internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso
Although there were no known cases of COVID-19 among the IDPs at the time of the study, tailored response plans were developed to facilitate the application of these measures in emergencies. The involvement of IDPs in the communication and sensitization process was necessary to facilitate their adherence to these different measures
Facilitators and challenges in collaboration between public health units and faith-based organizations to promote Covid-19 vaccine confidence in Ontario
Engaging with faith-based communities is an ongoing process that requires time, flexibility, and patience, but it is necessary to improve vaccine confidence and equity access among population groups made structurally vulnerable. Lessons learned from this research can guide the implementation of future vaccination programs
“If We Don’t Regroup, Hunger Will Kill Us…”
This study contributes to the body of knowledge on IDPs in the context of security crisis related to terrorism. Very little research has been done on covid-19 amongst IDPs in Africa and this is one of the first studies in Burkina Faso. Our diversified sample allowed us to consider the discourses of humanitarian actors working with IDPs, but also the discourses of IDPs in a context of aggravated health and security crisis. The challenges encounter…
Perceptions of Covid-19 among frontline health workers in Burkina Faso
The research has generated information on healthcare workers' knowledge and perceptions of COVID-19. Therefore, they are useful for decision-making regarding protective measures for health workers in the management of COVID-19
Explanatory models of psychotic-like experiences in rural Burkina Faso
In Sub-Saharan Africa, psychiatric care for severe mental disorders is scarce. This is especially true for people living in chronic poverty in rural areas. The way in which people with psychotic manifestations are socially perceived and treated remains under-researched, limiting the possibility of adapting services to their needs. In May 2017, 29 semi-structured individual interviews with indigent people reporting psychotic-like experiences and 8…

This study aimed to describe and analyze the perception of risk related to coronavirus in the general population. Methods: A qualitative, exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted in Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkin…
The Covid-19 pandemic in francophone West Africa
Much research on COVID-19 remains to be conducted in West Africa to better understand the dynamics of the pandemic, and to further examine the state responses to ensure their appropriateness and adaptation to the national contexts
Global health is more than just ‘Public Health Somewhere Else’
Global health can be anywhere as it often focuses on large-scale health inequities that are rooted in transnational determinants. Some global health initiatives and actors aim to find solutions to domestic problems. King and Koski's definition of global health may exacerbate inequities by reserving the right to call oneself a global health researcher to those who are privileged and have access to funding that enables them to travel to other setti…
National user fee abolition and health insurance scheme in Burkina Faso
Analysis of the implementation of a social protection initiative to admit the poorest of the poor to mutual health funds in Burkina Faso
To enable mutual health funds to extend coverage to poor people, the Mutual Health Support Network ( Réseau d’appui aux mutuelles de santé – RAMS) in 2012 launched an initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Action and Solidarity ( ministère de l’Action sociale et de la Solidarité nationale – MASSN) in Burkina Faso. This article reveals difficulties in the initiative's implementation, which resulted in the continued exclusion of po…

Endorsement of universal health coverage financial principles in Burkina Faso
In West Africa, health system funding rarely involves cross-subsidization among population segments. In some countries, a few community-based or professional health insurance programs are present, but coverage is very low. The financial principles underlying universal health coverage (UHC) sustainability and solidarity are threefold: 1) anticipation of potential health risks; 2) risk sharing and; 3) socio-economic status solidarity. In Burkina Fa…
Do community health workers perceive mechanisms associated with the success of community case management of malaria? A qualitative study from Burkina Faso
The use of community health workers to administer prompt treatments is gaining popularity in most sub-Saharan African countries. Their performance is a key challenge because it varies considerably, depending on the context, while being closely associated with the effectiveness of case management strategies. What determines community health workers' performance is still under debate. Based on a realist perspective, a systematic review recently hyp…
A community-based approach to indigent selection is difficult to organize in a formal neighbourhood in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
This intervention research provides new evidence about the feasibility of a community-based selection process in an urban setting in Africa by comparing two different urban settings. The participatory community-based selection process appeared to be suitable for the non loti neighbourhood, but other targeting strategies need to be found for loti areas. Specific budgets need to be allocated to increase the coverage of indigent targeting
Challenges of scaling up and of knowledge transfer in an action research project in Burkina Faso to exempt the worst-off from health care user fees
BACKGROUND: Systems to exempt the indigent from user fees have been put in place to prevent the worst-off from being excluded from health care services for lack of funds. Yet the implementation of these mechanisms is as rare as the operational research on this topic. This article analyzes an action research project aimed at finding an appropriate solution to make health care accessible to the indigent in a rural district of Burkina Faso. RESEARCH…
