  • Archaeology and the Itinerant Jesus

    J A Lloyd•BOOK•Archaeology and the Itinerant Jesus•2022

New Testament scholars generally agree that the historical Jesus was itinerant. Mark claims that Jesus travelled among the towns and villages of Galilee, preached in their synagogues, attracted large crowds, and journeyed through the surrounding regions. Yet few settlements are named, there is no clear itinerary of Jesus' travels, and the summary travel statements belong to Mark's editorial material. Consequently, there is a high degree of uncert…

  • Excavations at Euesperides (Benghazi)

    Open Access•J A Lloyd, Paul Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•1998•Cited by: 6•References: 8

A third season of excavation and finds analysis at Euesperides in March/April 1998 completed the fieldwork of the project begun in 1995. Further examination of the city defences suggests that their first phase should be dated not later than the early sixth century BC. The earliest masonry buildings within (and abutting) the city wall seem to belong to the 580s/570s BC. Other discoveries included a plain pebble pavement and a decorated ‘mixed styl…

Excavations by the Department of Antiquities, Benghazi, Garyunis University, Benghazi and the Society for Libyan Studies took place at the site of Euesperides for a total of seven weeks in 1995 and 1996. Work was concentrated on the northern margins of the city, where much new evidence for its topography and development came to light. The discoveries include successive fortification walls (the earlier of which may belong to c. 600 BC), part of a …

    Open Access•J A Lloyd•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•1989•Cited by: 4•References: 29

During the past two decades all the major cities of Cyrenaica have seen new fieldwork, and much has been achieved. The Department of Antiquities has been active, particularly in the increasingly important area of rescue archaeology. Its resolute and skilful efforts have included very important work at Shahat ( Cyrene ) (Walker (in Walda and Walker), this volume) and at Benghazi ( Berenice ). At the latter city, one of the least known in Cyrenaica…

Le testimonianze letterarie suggeriscono per i termini “testum” e “clibanus” una forte sovrapposizione, tanto da far pensare. che essi definiscano in realtà il medesimo oggetto — la teglia da forno.
