  • Lighting a Path for Autonomous Vehicle Communication: The Effect of Light Projection on the Detection of Reversing Vehicles by Older Adult Pedestrians

Open Access•Brian Mason, Sridhar Lakshmanan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Pedestrian understanding of driver intent is key to pedestrian safety on the road and in parking lots. With the development of autonomous vehicles (AVs), the human driver will be removed, and with it, the exchange that occurs between drivers and pedestrians (e.g., head nods, hand gestures). One possible solution for augmenting that communication is an array of high-intensity light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to project vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) mess…

  • Self-Doubt During Emerging Adulthood: The Conditional Mediating Influence of Mindfulness

    Open Access•Justin W Peer, Patrick Mcauslan et al.•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2015

Emerging adulthood (EA) is a critical time for identity exploration and making decisions regarding the future. Although most thrive, some emerging adults struggle with the prominent developmental features of this time. Little is known about factors that may positively influence development during EA. This study examined the mediating impact of mindfulness on the relationship between normative emerging adult processes (identity exploration, experi…

  • Property and Empire: From Colonialism to Globalization and Back

    Open Access•Patrick Mcauslan•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 5

This article argues that spatial re-ordering in the interests of globalisation goes back to the very beginning of modern Western empires. It does this by exploring the role of land law in globalisation. It shows that there is a remarkable continuity stretching back some 800 or more years in the use of land law to spearhead first English, but now Anglo-American, inputs into and interference with the spatial ordering and national land laws of count…

  • Personal reflections on drafting laws to improve women's access to land: Is There a Magic Wand

    Patrick Mcauslan•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern African Studies•2010•Cited by: 15•References: 5

This article presents the author's personal reflections on his extensive experience of drafting land laws in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda over the past 14 years. It highlights key legal issues in efforts to improve women's access to land through the law, and provides a frank discussion of the author's involvement in translating constitutional, policy and legal provisions into detailed common law legislation that can be consistently implemented to …

  • A Longitudinal Examination of Male College Students' Perpetration of Sexual Assault

Antonia Abbey, Patrick Mcauslan•ARTICLE•Journal of Consulting and…•2004

Self-administered surveys were completed by 197 men in college at 2 time points, 1 year apart. Men who committed sexual assault at multiple time points (repeat assaulters) had the most extreme scores on measures of hostility toward women, past sexual experiences, drinking in sexual situations, and adolescent delinquency. Nonassaulters had the least extreme scores and men who committed sexual assault at only 1 time point had scores that tended to …

Open Access•Antonia Abbey, Renee BeShears et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2004•Cited by: 26•References: 3

Only a few studies have examined the characteristics of sexual assault based on the tactics used by the perpetrator. In this study we compared the experiences of women who were forced to engage in vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse due to verbal coercion, physical force, or intoxication. Random-digit dialing was used to obtain a sample of 272 single African American and Caucasian women between the ages of 18 and 49 from the Detroit metropolitan a…

  • Perpetrators of alcohol‐involved sexual assaults: How do they differ from other sexual assault perpetrators and nonperpetrators

    Open Access•Tina Zawacki, Antonia Abbey et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2003•Cited by: 8•References: 44

Approximately 50% of sexual assaults involve alcohol. Researchers have documented situational characteristics that distinguish between sexual assaults that do and do not involve alcohol, but little attention has been paid to differences between the perpetrators of these two types of assault. In this study, discriminant function analysis was used to distinguish between college men (N=356) who reported perpetrating sexual assault that involved alco…

  • The International Development Act, 2002: Benign Imperialism or a Missed Opportunity

    Open Access•Patrick Mcauslan•ARTICLE•Modern Law Review•2003•Cited by: 1

The International Development Act, 2002 which provides the legal basis for the British Government’s aid programme, currently running at d3.6 billion per year and set to rise to over d4.5 billion, was introduced as a Bill into the House of Lords shortly after the election of 2001, given its Second Reading there on 2 July, given a Second Reading in the House of Commons on 7 November, 2001, and received the royal assent in February 2002. The Bill wa…

  • Alcohol-Involved Rapes: Are They More Violent

    Open Access•Antonia Abbey, A Monique Clinton et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2002•Cited by: 11•References: 4

Alcohol's psychological, cognitive, and motor effects contribute to rape. Based on theory and past research, we hypothesized that there would be a curvilinear relationship between the quantity of alcohol consumed by perpetrators and how aggressively they behaved. Moderate levels of intoxication encourage aggressiveness; however, extreme levels severely inhibit cognitive and motor capacity. We also hypothesized that victims' alcohol consumption wo…

  • Attitudinal, Experiential, and Situational Predictors of Sexual Assault Perpetration

Open Access•Antonia Abbey, Patrick Mcauslan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Interpersonal Violence•2001

Past research demonstrates that sexual assault perpetration is caused by multiple factors including attitudes, early experiences, and situational factors. In this study, 343 college men described either a sexual assault they had committed or their worst date. Discriminant function analysis indicated that attitudes about gender roles and alcohol, number of consensual sex partners, how well the man knew the woman, how isolated the setting was, alco…

  • Sexual Assault Perpetration by College Men: The Role of Alcohol, Misperception of Sexual Intent, and Sexual Beliefs and Experiences

Antonia Abbey, Patrick Mcauslan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Clinical…•1998

This study provides empirical support for a theoretical model previously developed by Abbey and colleagues (Abbey, 1 991; Abbey Ross, & McDuffie, 1994; Abbey, Ross, McDuffie, & McAuslan, 1 99b) to explain one set of pathways through which alcohol and sexual assault are linked. It was hypothesized that the mutual effects of beliefs and experiences with regard to dating, sexuality, and alcohol increase the likelihood that a man would misperceive a …

  • Making Law Work: Restructuring Land Relations in Africa

    Open Access•Patrick Mcauslan•ARTICLE•Development and Change•1998•Cited by: 19

This article explores a number of issues concerning the appropriate role for the law to play in the restructuring and reform of land relations and land tenure in Africa. Given current (external) donor tendencies, and (internal) pressures for reform from within, this is a particularly topical issue: in seeking to explore it, the author draws on his own experiences and involvement in land law reform, as well as other sources of information, concent…

  • Good Governance and Aid in Africa

    Open Access•Patrick Mcauslan•ARTICLE•Journal of African Law•1996

Strong criticisms and statements of concern about corruption and governance in Africa are being voiced more and more often. What is highly significant is that increasingly open and fierce criticism is being voiced by commentators in and from Africa itself. It is this fact that emboldens me to offer the following analysis and set of proposals for addressing the issues of good governance and aid in Africa. I shall concentrate principally on Angloph…

  • Alcohol and Dating Risk Factors for Sexual Assault Among College Women

Open Access•Antonia Abbey, Lisa Thomson Ro et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•1996•Cited by: 83•References: 1

American societal norms frequently link alcohol, dating, and sexuality. This cross-sectional study examined the role of alcohol and dating risk factors for sexual assault among a representative sample of female students at a large urban university. Over half of the 1,160 women had experienced some form of sexual assault. Ninety-five percent of these assaults were committed by someone the woman knew and almost half of these assaults involved alcoh…

  • The Coming Crisis in Legal Education

Patrick Mcauslan•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Society•1989

The theme of this article is that there is a crisis looming in legal education; that there are two ways of facing up to this crisis; and that unless those who are professional legal educators adopt a proactive approach to the crisis, we will inevitably be driven to adopting a reactive approach which will do irremedial harm to legal education and scholarship. We do not have much time. We have to act now

    Open Access•Patrick Mcauslan•ARTICLE•Journal of African Law•1987

I chose the topic of land and land policy as my contribution to this collection of essays in honour of Tony Allott because it seemed to me that there are certain parallels between the role of land in society and the role of Tony Allott in the development of the study of African Law and indeed of the study of the law of pre-literate societies by lawyers in the United Kingdom. Land is central to the workings of any society, but especially is this s…
