  • The cultural macroevolution of arcade video games

Open Access•Sergi Valverde, Blai Vidiella et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Human Sciences•2025

Arcade video games evolved in a constrained design space, following patterns of diversification, stabilisation, and collapse that mirror macroevolutionary processes. Despite their historical significance and detailed digital records, arcade games remain underexplored in cultural evolution research. Drawing on a dataset of 7,205 machines spanning four decades, we reconstruct the evolutionary trajectories of arcade niches using a multi-scale framew…

  • Punctuated equilibrium at 50

    Open Access•M J O''Brien, Sergi Valverde et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 88

The theory of punctuated equilibrium (PE) was developed a little over 50 years ago to explain long-term, large-scale appearance and disappearance of species in the fossil record. A theory designed specifically for that purpose cannot be expected, out of the box, to be directly applicable to biocultural evolution, but in revised form, PE offers a promising approach to incorporating not only a wealth of recent empirical research on genetic, linguis…

  • Dilution of expertise in the rise and fall of collective innovation

    Open Access•Salva Duran‐nebreda, M J O''Brien et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2022

Diversity drives both biological and artificial evolution. A prevalent assumption in cultural evolution is that the generation of novel features is an inherent property of a subset of the population (e.g., experts). In contrast, diversity—the fraction of objects in the corpus that are unique—exhibits complex collective dynamics such as oscillations that cannot be simply reduced to individual attributes. Here, we explore how a popular cultural dom…

  • Neutral models are a tool, not a syndrome

    Open Access•R A Bentley, Simon Carrignon et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 12

  • Visualizing the Evolution of Programming Languages

    Sergi Valverde•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2017•References: 1

The study of cultural evolutionary patterns, particularly when dealing with artifacts, is constrained by a lack of powerful quantitative methods. In this work, the project team shows that a simple network approach can reconstruct phylogenetic trees from existing databases of recorded artifact influences. They created novel network tools to visualize the large-scale evolution of programming languages. The simple idea of trees of influence can be e…

  • A Cultural Diffusion Model for the Rise and Fall of Programming Languages

Sergi Valverde, Valverde Valverde et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2015•References: 1

Our interaction with complex computing machines is mediated by programming languages (PLs), which constitute one of the major innovations in the evolution of technology. PLs allow flexible, scalable, and fast use of hardware and are largely responsible for shaping the history of information technology since the rise of computers in the 1950s. The rapid growth and impact of computers were followed closely by the development of PLs. As occurs with …
