  • Lombardic ornaments from San Mauro cemetery at Cividale, Italy

    Open Access•Alessandra Giumlia-Mair•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2024

A group of very significant Lombardic ornaments from the cemetery of San Mauro at Cividale del Friuli (Udine) in Italy has been examined and analysed with X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The objects are now part of the collections of the National Museum of Cividale del Friuli. Among the objects there are several so-called stirrup or radiate-head bow fibulae, one of which also shows an interesting cloisonné decoration, an S-shaped fibula with clo…

Inlay and patination are important elements in the prestige metalwork of East and Southeast Asia. There are several regional varieties, but they have many features in common, particularly in the use of a patinated copper alloy containing small amounts of gold. This in turn may suggest a common or at least linked ancestry, but probably no earlier than the sixteenth century. Most of this metalwork is no longer produced, but in Korea, production is …

  • Early Bronze Age copper smelting furnaces from Chrysokamino, Crete

Open Access•Philip P Betancourt, Susan C Ferrence et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the International…•2023

During the Early Bronze Age, before the expansion in copper mining and distribution of this metal from Cyprus, Aegean metal production relied especially on local ores. An example of this industry has been excavated from only a few sites in the Aegean. One of these smelting workshops has been excavated at Chrysokamino in eastern Crete. Its smelting furnaces provide a good example of the technology in use at early copper production centers in the A…

  • Ancestors of the Minoan sword

Open Access•Costis Davaras, Philip P Betancourt et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the International…•2023

The long sword, a weapon first known in the Aegean Bronze Age from Middle Minoan Crete (early second millennium BC), represented the culmination of a long period of development. Several problems in both casting and forging had to be solved before the production of large implements like swords could be achieved. Very early experiments with long weapons come from Early Minoan IB Crete, early in the third millennium BC. Examples from the cemetery at…

  • Enkomi Cup

    Open Access•R J H WANHILL, Alessandra Giumlia-Mair•ARTICLE•Historical Metallurgy•2023

Macrophotographs of the Enkomi Cup have been examined to assess the cracking damage in the Cup metal, a silver alloy. The resulting interpretations and their implications indicate that the cracks are most probably due to long-term stress corrosion that stopped well before excavation and restoration. It is concluded that no additional restoration and conservation measures are needed

  • On Blue and Green Pigments from the St. George Cathedral of Veliky Novgorod

    Open Access•Alessandra Giumlia-Mair, Alessandra R G Giumlia-Mair et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeomaterials•2022

This paper presents the first analytical data obtained from the examination of fragments of stunning Russian–Byzantine frescoes recovered from an archaeological excavation at Veliky Novgorod, one of the oldest cities in Russia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The archaeologists of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have been working on architectural excavations at Novgorod for more than 20 years. In the last seven ye…

    Open Access•Béla Török, Alessandra Giumlia-Mair et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2022•Referencias: 1

This case study presents the results and conclusions of chemical and metallographic analyses carried out on metal finds (gilded silver mounts, jewelry made of silver- and copper-based alloys, and iron horse fittings) found in nine graves excavated at the 10th century site of the Terjék-tanya at Kiskunfélegyháza (Hungary). The examinations were performed with portable handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (ED-XRF), optical microscopy (OM) and s…

  • Plating and Surface Treatments on Ancient Metalwork

    Open Access•Alessandra Giumlia-Mair•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeomaterials•2020

This paper presents an overview of techniques employed in antiquity—in different regions and at different times—for decorating metals by plating or applying surface treatments. Quite often the intention was to disguise metals and alloys to give the impression of better-quality materials. In other cases, the treatments produced special decorative effects and unusual colors. This paper deals with plating with gold and silver, various methods of gil…

DIS MANIBVS GERMANICI IVLII CAESARIS (on the 2,000th anniversary of his death) This archaeological note presents the findings from a scientific analysis of the bronze of an over-life-sized cuirassed statue of Germanicus from Amelia (ancient Ameria). The examination was recently carried out in the Museo Archeologico di Amelia to determine both the nature of the statue's production and its relative dating. The 41 nondestructive X-ray fluorescence s…

  • The manufacturing process of the gold bust of Marcus Aurelius

    Open Access•Anne de Pury-Gysel, Eberhard H Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Roman Archaeology•2016

This paper presents the results of applying neutron imaging methods to the gold bust of Marcus Aurelius, an analytical procedure that was carried out in 2006 at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Villigen (Switzerland). The results have produced a better understanding of the gold repoussé manufacturing techniques for large pieces. Given the number of gold statues that existed at Rome and in its provinces, the preserved pieces represent only a tiny fra…

  • Copper and Copper Alloys in the Southeastern Alps

    Open Access•Alessandra Giumlia-Mair, A GIUMLIA‐MAIR•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2005•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 2

In recent years, several groups of archaeological metal finds from the areas around the southeastern Alps, dated between Bronze Age and Roman times, have been scientifically analysed (by ICP, AAS and/or XRF) within the framework of different projects. The data now available give a fairly good general picture of the evolution and development of metallurgy in this area and seem to indicate that the region played an important role in the exchange of…
