  • Shedding Light on the Matter

    M M T Loy, Michael Loy et al.•ARTICLE•JOURNAL OF GREEK ARCHAEOLOGY•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 27

Reconstructing moments in ancient history is done most effectively when we draw together different types of evidence. Particularly given the fragmentary and random shape of our datasets, many scholars would agree that it is important to combine material – and sometimes patterns only become visible when we do so in new and experimental ways. As scholarship on ancient Greek religion has become increasingly interdisciplinary in recent years, many sc…

  • An agro-pastoral palimpsest

    Open Access•Tim Wilkinson, Toby C Wilkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•2020

Examination of a number of satellite and aerial images of the Milesian peninsula has allowed the mapping of a large number of apparently ancient linear features across the landscape. These are here interpreted, for the most part, as relicts of agro-economic field systems of unknown date, but most plausibly established during the Archaic, Hellenistic or late antique periods and perhaps used for centuries after, before the economic decline of the r…

  • Figures in Motion

    Open Access•Anja Slawisch•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•2019•References: 25

A re-examination of three marble sculpture fragments from Miletos and their dating provides the catalyst for a revised approach to the source of the Severe Style both in chronological and geographical terms. A number of evidential threads are assembled to demonstrate the likelihood that the Severe Style has its origins in an earlier artistic milieu than usually assumed, i.e. before 494 bc , with Ionian workshops playing an equal if not leading ro…

  • Processions, Propaganda, and Pixels

Anja Slawisch, Tim Wilkinson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The Sacred Way connecting the city of Miletos to the sanctuary of Didyma has long been considered one of the best-documented examples of a processional road from the ancient world. Views of the road have become ossified around an orthodox reconstruction of the route, which is assumed to have remained relatively static from the Archaic to the Roman period. A reexamination of the full epigraphic and archaeological evidence, incorporating the latest…
