Discussion and Debate: In Defense of a Contextual Classical Archaeology
In two recent articles in JMA, Robin Osborne (2015) and, in a response, James Whitley (2016) present compelling, if provocative, thoughts on the methodological and intellectual divergence between the study of artifacts derived from contexts produced by archaeological excavation, and those from museum collections often lacking well-documented provenience. While both authors acknowledge the importance of excavation and museum collections, the polar…
Excavations in the Archaic Civic Buildings at Azoria in 2005–2006
Continuing excavation on the South Acropolis at Azoria in northeastern Crete has exposed buildings of Archaic date (7th-early 5th century b.c.) that served communal or public functions. Work conducted in 2005 and 2006 completed the exploration of Late Archaic levels within the Communal Dining Building (putative andreion complex), the Monumental Civic Building, and the adjacent Service Building. These contexts and their assemblages, especially the…
The Excavation of Archaic Houses at Azoria in 2005–2006
This article reports on the excavation of Archaic houses (6th-early 5th century b.c.) in 2005 and 2006 at Azoria in eastern Crete. Five houses are discussed: four on the South Acropolis on the periphery of the civic center, and one on the North Acropolis. Well-preserved floor deposits provide evidence for room functions and permit a preliminary analysis of domestic space. The houses fill a lacuna in the published record of the 6th and early 5th c…

Excavations at Azoria, 2003?2004, Part 1: The Archaic Civic Complex
This article constitutes the first of two reports on fieldwork conducted at Azoria in eastern Crete during the 2003 and 2004 excavation seasons. The focus of excavation was on the South Acropolis, where buildings of Archaic date (7th-early 5th century b.c.) suggesting public or civic functions have come to light. The complex includes a possible andreion on the west slope, a cult building on the terrace south of the peak, and storerooms and kitche…
Stylistic Diversity and Diacritical Feasting at Protopalatial Petras: A Preliminary Analysis of the Lakkos Deposit
This paper presents an overview of an assemblage of Middle Minoan (MM) IB pottery from a closed deposit known as the "Lakkos" at the Minoan palace of Petras in eastern Crete. The various ware groups are discussed with the aim of improving our understanding of the Proto-palatial ceramic sequence in this part of Crete and the function of stylistic variation in a palatial context. Recent studies of the earliest palaces have shifted discussion away f…

The Port of Tholos in Eastern Crete and the Role of a Roman Horreum Along the Egyptian ‘Corn Route’
Roman provincial warehouses and rural horrea in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean remain largely undocumented and their functions are poorly understood. A recent intensive archaeological survey at the bay of Tholos in the Kavousi area of northeastern Crete has investigated one such horreum and has explored the regional archaeological context of the building and its hinterland. The present study discusses the architectural form and archaeologic…
Archaeological Survey at Kavousi, East Crete: Preliminary Report

Excavations at Kalo Khorio, East Crete
This report presents the results of an excavation in the area of Kalo Khorio–Istron in eastern Crete, which recovered a portion of a Protopalatial (Middle Minoan I-II) cemetery and a well-preserved Early Minoan I house. Although Prepalatial and Protopalatial house tomb architecture from the eastern end of the island is well documented, all too frequently the internal configuration of burials—particularly larnax and pithos interments—is ill define…

Intensive Survey, Traditional Settlement Patterns and Dark Age Crete: The Case of Early Iron Age Kavousi
The Study of Dark Age Greece has lacked both stratigraphic control from excavated settlement sites and substantial survey data, which ideally ought to be the basis for interpretations of the period. The Kavousi area of east Crete is a local environment rich in Dark Age remains which in recent years has been subjected to intensive survey and archaeological excavation. This paper examines 'traditional' (pre-World War II) and Early Iron Age Settleme…

The Kavousi Coarse Wares: A Bronze Age Chronology for Survey in the Mirabello Area, East Crete
This paper presents the results of the Kavousi-Thriphti Survey coarse-ware study. It is argued that coarse utilitarian pottery can be used for dating sites in archaeological survey, and further, that coarse pottery on the surface of any site with a domestic or storage function may represent a wider, and thus more accurate, chronological range than the associated fine wares. Detailed descriptions of 18 coarse fabric types identified in the survey …
