The challenge of a successful discrimination of ancient marbles (part I)
Innovative application of portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to identify Göktepe white marble artifacts
Ancient ‘Black’ Decorative Stones and the Ephesian Origin of Sculptural bigio antico
Isotopic, EPR and petrographic studies aimed at establishing the provenance of sculptural bigio antico are reported, including 18 possible quarry sites and 21 ancient sculptures. The results demonstrate that the Belevi quarry, north-east of Ephesos, above the more famous white marble quarry, was the major source of this marble. Nineteen artefacts belong to Belevi, whereas the precise origin of the remaining two is unknown, but must probably be fo…

A Multi‐Method Database of the Black and White Marbles of G öktepe (Aphrodisias), Including Isotopic, EPR , Trace and Petrographic Data
A database of the ancient marbles of G öktepe near Aphrodisias is reported, and includes 160 white, black and bichrome samples from 13 quarries and two waste deposits. The quarries are grouped into four districts. Districts 1 and 2, to the north, produced exclusively black or dark grey marbles ( nero antico ). Districts 3 and 4 produced white statuary marble. Nero antico and a black and white stone were also quarried in district 4, where the blac…
Provenance Studies of the Marble of Ancient Sculptures in the T ribune of the U ffizi G allery, Florence
The provenance of the marbles used for the five ancient sculptures on display in the T ribune of the U ffizi—the Venere Medici , the Apollo Medici , the Satiro danzante , the Arrotino and the Lottatori —has been determined using a well‐established multi‐method approach that includes isotopic, petrographic and EPR data. The Arrotino was found to be made of Docimium marble from the Phrygian quarries of Iscehisar, whereas P arian lychnites was used …
The Docimium Marble Sculptures of the Grotto of Tiberius at Sperlonga
Seventeen marble samples drawn from the Scylla, Polyphemos, and Pasquino Groups, the Theft of the Palladium statue group, and the Ganymede statue discovered at Sperlonga in 1957 were investigated scientifically and proved to be all Docimium marble from the quarries of İscehisar near Afyon. New quarry data now available for the lithos lartios of Rhodes and for the white marble of the island of Kos and the quarries of Göktepe near Aphrodisias allow…

Aphrodisian Marble From the Göktepe Quarries
The marble of seven under-lifesize sculptures of barbarians, now in the archaeological museums of Naples, Venice and the Vatican, commonly considered to be Roman copies of the Pergamene Lesser Dedication in Athens, comes from the Göktepe marble quarries near Aphrodisias, as is shown by isotopic, electron paramagnetic resonance, trace analyses, and of petrographic data. Since this marble was used mostly by Aphrodisian artists, this finding confirm…
An Updated, Multi‐method Database of Ephesos Marbles, Including White, Greco Scritto and Bigio Varieties
An updated database of Ephesos marbles including 244 samples from 16 quarrying districts is reported. The unknown Greco Scritto quarries near Hasançavuslar and the Bigio marbles from the quarries of Belevi and of Mt Panayir are also presented. The paper, however, is mostly devoted to the identification of the Ephesos white marbles, whereas the problems posed by the Bigio and Greco Scritto varieties are deferred to future work. The samples have be…
The Docimian Marble of the Ludovisi and Capitoline Gauls and Other Replicas of the Pergamene Dedications
Scientific analysis proves that the marble used in four ancient sculptures related to the Attalid dedication in Pergamon (i.e., the Dying or Capitoline Gaul, the Suicidal or Ludovisi Gaul, the head of a Persian, and the head of a Greek) is white Docimian marble. A fifth sculpture related to the Lesser Dedication in Athens (i.e., the mounted Amazon killing a barbarian now in the Palazzo Massimo in Rome) is carved from Carrara marble. To identify t…

The Properties and Identification of Marble From Proconnesos (Marmara Island, Turkey)
This paper reports an updated and enlarged archaeometric database of Proconnesos marbles with the aim of attaining more reliable inter‐ and intra‐site identification. Quarry and artefact samples (n = 397) from 23 different quarrying areas were characterized using petrographic, isotopic and EPR results. The most distinct property of Proconnesos marbles is their extremely weak EPR intensity, associated with the low concentration of Mn 2+ impurities…

An Epr and Isotopic Study of the Marbles of the Trajan's Arch at Ancona
The provenance of 20 marble samples drawn from the Trajan's arch at Ancona, which is supposed to be made of Greek, Hymettian marble, has been established on the basis of the independent use of EPR and isotopic data. The results of the two methods are in good agreement and unequivocally indicate a Proconnesian provenance. Sixteen samples are assigned to this site, whereas two are classified as untypical Proconnesian samples and the remaining two a…
The Possibility of Provenancing A Series of Bronze Punic Coins Found At Tharros (Western Sardinia) Using the Literature Lead Isotope Database
A sample set of 42 bronze Punic coins dating from the third century bc and excavated in the Phoenician, Punic and then Roman town of Tharros (western Sardinia) has been used to test the performance of the literature lead isotope database and to establish a well defined provenancing procedure. A selection from the available database, including Cypriot, Sardinian and Spanish ore deposits, has been used. The complete assignment has been carried out …
Multi‐method Marble Provenance Determinations
A multi‐method approach, based on petrography, stable isotope data and electron spin resonance spectroscopy for assigning the provenance of white marbles, is presented. A total of 11 experimental variables has been used, including the quantitative measurement of the sample colour and its homogeneity. On this basis we attempt to distinguish the three main quarrying basins of the Carrara district, that is, Torano, Miseglia and Colonnata. Such discr…
Electron Spin Resonance Study of White Marbles From Tharros (Sardinia)
The characterization of various samples of white marble from the archaeological site of Tharros (Sardinia) is the starting point for the reexamination of the capabilities of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy as a tool for identifying the quarries of origin of ancient marble artefacts. Existing methods and data bases are employed for the assignment of our samples, but also reviewed to see if a more extensive use of the technique is feasib…
Electron Spin Resonance Study of Paper Samples Dating From the Fifteenth to the Eighteenth Century
Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to detect paramagnetic impurities in differently degraded antique sheets of unprinted paper. Impurities consist primarily of transition metal ions (Fe 3+ , Mn 2+ , Cu 2+ ) present in different environments and symmetries. Organic radicals, common in modern, wood pulp paper, are absent in these antique samples made from rags. Fe 3+ is the largest impurity (from 300 to 700 ppm). Mn 2+ is also pre…
