  • Greek Architecture

    Barbara A Barletta, Barbara Barletta•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2011•References: 30

The study of Greek architecture grew out of the meticulous recording of buildings and their components by 18th- and 19th-century investigators. Although the aims have changed, with an increasing emphasis on historical and social context, the basic methods of documentation remain the same. This essay traces the history of the discipline as a background to modern approaches, geographic emphases, and new perspectives. It surveys the work of archaeol…

  • In Defense of the Ionic Frieze of the Parthenon

    Barbara A Barletta, Barbara Barletta•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article challenges the suggestion made by various authors that the Ionic sekos frieze of the Parthenon was originally planned as Doric. It examines each piece of evidence in turn and offers alternative explanations. Perhaps the most persuasive argument for an originally Doric frieze is the presence of regulae and guttae on the epistyle crown of the facades. The elements do not, however, continue as expected on the sides of the sekos. Further…

  • An "Ionian Sea" Style in Archaic Doric Architecture

    Barbara A Barletta, Barbara Barletta•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Of the regional styles in Archaic Doric architecture, that identified in the Achaian colonies of South Italy has received particular attention. One of its distinctive elements, a capital with leaf necking, recalls Mycenaean decoration. This evidence, along with the presence of several characteristics of the style (including the capital with leaf necking, the prostyle plan, and the half-column) in the Peloponnesos, has led to the suggestion of ori…

  • La statua marmorea di Mozia e la scultura di stile severo in Sicilia. Atti della giornata di studio, Marsala, 1 giugno 1986

  • The Draped Kouros Type and the Workshop of the Syracuse Youth

Barbara A Barletta, Barbara Barletta•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1987•Cited by: 2

The "kouros" is an Archaic sculptural type of a standing youth, usually nude. Only about 35 examples, collected here, exist in which the figure is represented with drapery. All of these appear in Ionic environments with the single exception of a statue found in Syracuse. The origin of that sculpture has been the focus of some debate. It is argued here that the work was produced locally, but under considerable Ionic influence
