Three Theological Fragments
In the Michigan Collection there are three fragmentary papyri, which have these points in common: they are definitely Christian in character and though fairly legible have not thus far been identified. All seem to be of an homiletic or interpretive character but the extent of each is too small to admit of a more definite classification. All of the other Christian fragments in the Michigan Collection have already been published and the fact that t…
The Appointment of a Guardian by the Prefect of Egypt
A Fragment of the Acta Pauli in the Michigan Collection
The fragment, P. Mich. 1317, is a damaged scrap of papyrus 19.8 by 6.3 cm. (73⁄4 by 21⁄2 inches). It is much darkened with age and otherwise damaged by dirt, water, and wear. It is a portion of a leaf of a book written on both sides, which came into our collection classified as a bit of a lost Gospel, though it did not seem to me to conform to that designation. My first transcript of the text was shown to my colleague Professor Bonner, and by him…

The Egyptian Text of the Four Gospels and Acts
During recent years the trend of New Testament textual studies has been toward the identification and establishment of local texts. If these be old, they serve as witnesses to the original text, if late, they are helpful in showing the trends of textual development and add to our knowledge of the history of the Church. We are far removed from the New Testament studies and problems of 1898, when Grenfell and Hunt published the first papyrus fragme…

A Newly Discovered Leaf of the Freer Psalter
Among the parchment leaves which formed a large part of a purchase made by the late Professor Francis W. Kelsey early in 1927 I later found one of the missing leaves of the Freer Psalter, published in 1917. The bundle was made up of parchment and paper leaves, all, with this one exception, comparatively late and not of great value. Most of them are more or less damaged and have no connection with one another, evidently representing a variety of f…

A Papyrus Fragment of Acts in the Michigan Collection
Papyrus 1571 of the Michigan Collection was bought in Cairo in 1924 in a large purchase, which was allotted to the contributing institutions by Mr. H. I. Bell of the British Museum. Many documents in the Michigan part of the purchase came from the Fayûm, but no further evidence is obtainable regarding the place of origin of this fragment. It came to us in three pieces, of which one was only partly unfolded and all were so dirty as to be rather il…
An Early Papyrus Fragment of the Gospel of Matthew in the Michigan Collection
Greek Papyrus 1570 of the University of Michigan Collection is a leaf of a papyrus book written on both sides. The preserved portion measures 43⁄4 by 9 inches (121 by 224 mm.). One entire line is lost at the bottom, and over half of each of the four lines immediately preceding. Of the top line only eight or nine letters are preserved. All other lines are somewhat damaged at one end or the other. Such loss often amounts to five or six letters. Eig…
A Papyrus Manuscript of the Minor Prophets
Among the parchment and papyrus manuscripts and fragments brought to this country by the University of Michigan Expedition under Professor Francis W. Kelsey, only one is of paramount interest to the Biblical scholar. There are indeed lectionaries and parts of lectionaries dating from the eleventh century and later, and even a single papyrus fragment of a Psalm, but the former are uninteresting textually, and the latter is too small to give much e…
