Ancient Documents and their Contexts
Ancient Documents and their Contexts contains the proceedings of the First North American Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy(San Antonio, Texas, 4-5 January 2011). It gathers seventeen papers presented at this conference, ranging from technical discussions of epigraphic formulae and palaeography to broad consideration of inscriptions as social documents and visual records
Myrina
Myrina, a pre‐Greek name, secondarily associated with the homonymous Amazon, was, together with Hephaestia, one of the two major cities in ancient Lemnos.
Samothrace
Samothrace (Greek: Samothrake) is the smallest of the Thracian islands (178 km 2 ) in the northern Aegean, shaped as a spectacular mountain (1,611 m) rising out of the sea.
Lemnos
“Smouldering” Lemnos, as the Homeric hymn to Apollo aptly describes it, is the largest of the Thracian islands (in the northern Aegean), occupying 477 km 2 , with an elevation of up to 470 m.
Imbros
Imbros is one of the Thracian islands in the northern Aegean, strategically located close to the Dardanelles. The “rocky” island (Hom. II . 24.78), which had abundant water, but was otherwise lacking in resources, occupies a territory of 225 sq km, with an elevation of up to 597 m. The ancient history of Imbros is marked by its close relationship with Athens.

Inscriptions and Iconography in the Monuments of the Thracian Rider
The Thracian rider monuments are either funerary or dedicated to various deities. The inscriptions provide the only certain way to identify the deities or the monument's type. After examining the relationship between inscriptions and iconography, I suggest in the present study that the horseman is an iconographical convention for a god/hero, and that his iconography is borrowed from Greek art. Interpreting the horseman as a conventional image obv…
