The Medusa Rondanini
Furtwängler dated the Medusa Rondanini to the fifth century B.C. Later scholars have accepted Furtwängler's date without question, and have concentrated their efforts on attributing the piece to a known fifth century master. If the Medusa Rondanini is a fifth century piece, then as a "beautiful gorgoneion" it is unique, and without parallel in type for the next 100 years.
