CanThere Be Reconciliation between African and NonAfrican Philosophy?'

  • The status of oral traditions in the history of philosophy: Methodological considerations

    Anke Grane•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Philosophy•2022•References: 14

Today, there is a growing consensus among philosophers in Africa, Latin America and other regions of the world that the history of philosophy has to consider both written and oral sources in the reconstruction of the history of philosophy. Even though it is usually not denied that philosophy also expresses itself in oral practices, such as conversation or instruction, the question remains as to how oral philosophical traditions can become part of…

  • Heinz Kimmerle's intercultural philosophy and the quest for epistemic justice

    Open Access•Renate Schepen, Anke Grane•ARTICLE•The Journal for Transdisciplinary…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Since the 1990s epistemic (in)justice has been a central issue of post-colonial and feminist studies. But only during the last decade the term has become paradigmatic and new aspects of the issue have been addressed – particularly because of the works of De Sousa Santos (2012, 2014) and Fricker (2007) . One of the pioneers of an intercultural approach to philosophy is the German philosopher Heinz Kimmerle (1930 – 2016) , who in the 1980s began to…

  • Ubuntu and the concept of cosmopolitanism

    Anke Grane•ARTICLE•Human Affairs•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Based on the ideas of two main representatives of the academic discourse on Ubuntu, Michael O. Eze and Mogobe B. Ramose, the paper shows how the concept of Ubuntu can contribute to transcending conventional concepts of cosmopolitanism. Referring to the concept of Ubuntu, Ramose and Eze criticize ‘Western’ concepts of cosmopolitanism because they always seem to start from binary oppositions (‘I’ and ‘other’), which must be reconciled. ‘Western’ co…

  • Writing the history of philosophy in Africa: Where to Begin

    Open Access•Anke Grane•ARTICLE•Journal of African Cultural Studies•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 7

Although the study of the history of European philosophy has a long tradition beginning with Plato's descriptions of the teachings of various thinkers in his dialogues, the study of the history of African philosophy, particularly that of sub-Saharan Africa, is a rather young discipline. The history of African philosophy offers a number of interesting challenges, such as the question of how the purely text-based European tradition is to deal with …

  • Is the debate on ‘global justice’ a global one? Some considerations in view of modern philosophy in Africa

    Anke Grane•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Ethics•2015•Cited by: 11•References: 9

At present, the debate on global justice, a debate which is at the core of global ethics, is largely being conducted by European and American scholars from different disciplines without taking into account views and concepts from other regions of the world, particularly, from the Global South. The lack of a truly intercultural, interreligious, and international exchange of ideas provokes doubts whether the concepts of global justice introduced so…
