  • Re-Imagining Leadership Roles beyond the Shadow of Bureaucracy

    Open Access•Lisa C Ehrich, Fenwick W English•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2024

The aim of this conceptual paper is to revisit the relationship between leadership and bureaucracy. The dominant and unquestioned way of thinking about leadership is to equate it as an undertaking exercised by leaders, those officers who occupy hierarchical positions in organizations. For example, senior leadership and middle leadership in schools are often associated with formal hierarchical roles played by senior and middle leaders. However, it…

  • El Cid: Can an Aesthetics Lens Save Transformational Leadership from Itself

    Open Access•Fenwick W English, Lisa C Ehrich•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2024

Countless articles and books have been written about transformational leadership theory since the late 1970s when it first appeared in the literature. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to illustrate that transformational leadership contains both logical and psychological problems when explaining the nature of leadership and as an empirically supportable and verifiable construct. It aims to show that its failure to garner evidence from a sci…

    Open Access•Barbara Watterston, Lisa C Ehrich•ARTICLE•School Leadership and Management•2024

The focus of this paper lies in our special interest in women leaders and those aspiring to leadership positions in schools and other educational contexts within Australia. Leadership is a gendered concept, and due to a myriad of factors including conscious and unconscious bias, and the challenges of balancing career with other life commitment, the reality is that women’s career journeys are different from men’s. Women’s unique career trajectorie…

    Megan Kimber, Lisa C Ehrich•ARTICLE•Journal of Higher Education…•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 42

Managerial changes to Australian universities have had considerable impact on employees. In this article, we consider some of these changes and apply a theory known as the democratic deficit to them. This theory was developed from the democratic critique of managerialism, as it has been applied in the public sector in countries with Westminster-type political systems. This deficit covers the: weakening of accountability through responsibility bei…

  • Are alphabetic language -derived models of L2 reading relevant to L1 logographic background readers

John Ehrich, John Fitzgerald Ehrich et al.•ARTICLE•Language Awareness•2013

In this paper, we argue that second language (L2) reading research, which has been informed by studies involving first language (L1) alphabetic English reading, may be less relevant to L2 readers with non-alphabetic reading backgrounds, such as Chinese readers with an L1 logographic (Chinese character) learning history. We provide both neuroanatomical and behavioural evidence from Chinese language reading studies to support our claims. The paper …

    Lisa C Ehrich, Fenwick W English•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This article follows the lead of several researchers who claim there is an urgent need to utilize insights from the arts, aesthetics and the humanities to expand our understanding of leadership. It endeavours to do this by exploring the metaphor of dance. It begins by critiquing current policy metaphors used in the leadership literature that present a narrow and functional view of leadership. It presents and discusses a conceptual model of leader…

  • The Problematic Nature of Dress for Women Managers

    Open Access•Lisa C Ehrich•ARTICLE•Women in Management Review•1994

Argues that dress is not a straightforward issue for women managers today. It is problematic on a number of different levels. Women receive many messages via the media concerning the importance of their appearance and presentation. The “dressing for success” slogan is problematic as it infers that success is as easy as donning well‐cut clothes. Contends that this argument trivializes the difficulties women managers face when they wish to break th…
