Inside-Out
Cultural psychology is studying how human culture and psyche interact and mutually constitute each other. Diverse cultural models have been developed to describe cultural features or dimensions to explain differences and similarities between people’s behaviours, emotions, values and interactions across cultures. The present study takes an in-depth and outsider approach, by investigating migrants’ perspectives on German culture. Using go-along, se…
"Knowing My Way around" - The Role of Urban Spaces for Migrant Identity Content and Sense of Belonging in Germany
Sense of belonging (SoB) and identity content have been studied focusing on social relations, but, as we suggest, might also involve a spatial dimension. The present project set out to better understand the relationship between space, SoB and identity content in the context of relocation. The research consisted of qualitative semi-structured and go-along interviews with 36 external migrants who live in four different German cities: Berlin, Bremen…
Immigrant political participation is associated with more positive majority immigration attitudes across European countries and Swiss cantons
Immigrants are increasingly participating in politics, publicizing their political concerns and contributions. How does such political participation relate to national majorities’ immigration attitudes? Previous research suggested potential improvement of majority attitudes but also demonstrated the exacerbation of perceived threat. We investigated whether greater immigrant political participation is related to more positive or negative immigrati…
The role of minority discrimination and political participation in shaping majority perceptions of discrimination
We develop a minority influence approach to multilevel intergroup research and examine whether country-level minority norms shape majority members’ perceptions of discrimination. Defining minority norms via actual minority discrimination and political participation, we hypothesized that in national contexts with greater minority experiences of discrimination and greater minority political participation, majority perceptions of discrimination shou…
Past and Present Intergroup Contact and Conflict Among Inhabitants of Former Mixed Villages of Cyprus
Positive attitudes and trust towards former adversaries facilitate reconciliation and peace building. Both historical and current intergroup experiences such as intergroup contact and conflict predict intergroup attitudes and trust, but no previous research has investigated the joint effects of these experiences. Therefore, we study the interplay of positive intergroup contact preceding conflict, negative experiences of the conflict, and positive…
Radicalization and deradicalization
We analyzed five narrative interviews with individuals who disengaged from Islamist extremist and Salafist ideologies in an early stage of radicalization (Study 1) and seven semistructured expert interviews with employees of German deradicalization programs (Study 2) to explore which root factors are common to both radicalization and deradicalization and how they manifest. Employing a coding-reliability approach to Thematic Analyses, we construct…
Nonresponse Bias on Dimensions of Political Activity Amongst Political Elites
Virtually all political surveys of citizens ’ political behavior suffer from unit nonresponse. Typically, researchers ’ analyses implicitly assume that the nonrespon-dents do not differ systematically from the respondents on dimensions of political activity (King, Honaker, Joseph, & Scheve, 2001). For example, regressions fit with only respondents assume that the model for respondents applies equally to nonrespondents. When such similarity assump…
