On the Functional Redundancy of Alcohol Tolerance in Rice Societies
This article analyzes the evolutionary genesis of the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) mutation in East Asia through the lenses of institutional economics and systems sociology. While biology typically frames the absence of alcohol tolerance as a metabolic defect, this paper proposes the concept of functional redundancy. We argue that the specific social organization of rice societies—characterized by deep material interdependence—rendered alcoho…
Philanthropy in a Secular Society
We investigate the relationship between religious and charitable giving. We find crowding in between the German church tax and charitable giving for church members, but not for church leavers. In contrast to church members, donations of church leavers and nonmembers are also highly responsive to the tax deductibility. Additionally, nondonors exhibit a significantly increased probability of leaving their church compared to donors. Finally, leaving…
Tuition fees and the time to graduation: Evidence From a Natural Experiment
We used the recent introduction of general tuition fees at public universities in several of the German federal states as a natural experiment to identify whether tuition fees reduce the time to graduation and the extent to which they do so. We employed a difference-in-differences approach with the states that introduced fees as the treatment group and the states that remained fee-free as the control group. Our results indicate that the introduct…
Federal TAX Competition – How does the Institutional Structure of a Country change Tax Outcomes
The interrelations of taxation and federal structure have been extensively analysed from various perspectives. The present paper looks at two competing countries of different institutional structures. It examines how the tax rates set at each level of both countries vary in a given setting, when a federal and a unitary country compete for mobile tax base, or both countries are organised as federations. The paper discusses whether or not tax rates…
Andererseits sollten private Bildungs…

Trade Union Objectives and Economic Growth
A trade union whose purpose is to raise wages above the competitive level may foster economic growth if it succeeds in shifting income away from the owners of capital to the workers and if the workers' marginal propensity to save exceeds the one of capitalists. We make this point in an overlapping generations framework with unionized labor. Considering a monopoly union which cares for wages and employment, we determine a range of trade union obje…
Higher Education Financing and Income Redistribution
This paper considers an optimal income tax cum higher education policy. It shows that in the presence of an optimal income tax system higher education should be taxed rather than subsidized. Furthermore, income taxes should become less progressive when an optimal higher education policy is introduced.
Productivity Growth and the Political Economy of Social Security
