Determinants of Latine Patients’ Trust in an Immigrant-Inclusive Health Care Institution
Introduction: Past research has overlooked both the institutional factors of medical mistrust and immigrants’ perspectives. We aimed to understand factors influencing Latine immigrant patients’ medical mistrust, focusing on their perspectives of immigrant-inclusive institutional policies. Methods: We conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-method study at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Los Angeles, CA, involving surveys ( N = 170)…

Innovative strategies and implementation science approaches for health delivery among migrants in humanitarian settings
Introduction Over 100 million displaced people rely on health services in humanitarian contexts, defined as unstable or transitory settings created in response to complex emergencies. While services are often described, there is a dearth of evidence on best practices for successful implementation to guide efforts to optimize health delivery. Implementation science is a promising but underutilized tool to address this gap. This scoping review eval…

Health effects and user perceptions of the US Customs and Border Patrol OneTM mobile application
Our findings suggest that asylum seekers at the Reynosa port of entry perceive CBP OneTM negatively, with detrimental effects towards their mental and physical health. This study highlights how immigration policy can influence health and suggests that more creative and humane approaches are needed for people seeking asylum at the Mexico-US border
Changes in Self-management During the Covid-19 Pandemic Among Adults with Type 2 Diabetes at a Federally Qualified Health Center

Impact on Health Care Utilization and Costs of a Medicaid Community Health Worker Program in Detroit, 2018–2020
Objectives. To compare health care utilization and costs between beneficiaries randomly assigned to usual services versus a community health worker (CHW) program implemented by 3 Medicaid health plans. Methods. From February 2018 to June 2019, beneficiaries residing in Detroit, Michigan’s Cody Rouge neighborhood with more than 3 emergency department (ED) visits or at least 1 ambulatory care‒sensitive hospitalization in the previous 12 months were…
Challenges and Effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Asylum Seeker Health at the U.S.-Mexico Border
Our findings among asylum seekers in a Matamoros camp highlight the challenges to implementing disease reduction policies in low-resource congregate camps. Policies to address disease outbreaks focusing on the social determinants of health, health care access barriers, and community engagement may be more acceptable to asylum seekers, suggesting the need for effective strategies to provide prevention information that complements such measures
Protests Against Police Violence Met by More Police Violence—A Dangerous Paradox
A multi-stakeholder evaluation of the Baltimore City virtual supermarket program
This evaluation summarizes lessons learned and serves as a guide to other public health leaders interested in developing similar programs. Provisions in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Bill 2014 allow for select grocers to pilot online transactions with SNAP benefits. If these pilots are efficacious, the VSP model could be easily disseminated

Social Determinants of Health, Cost-related Nonadherence, and Cost-reducing Behaviors Among Adults With Diabetes
BACKGROUND: Cost-related nonadherence (CRN) is prevalent among individuals with diabetes and can have significant negative health consequences. We examined health-related and non-health-related pressures and the use of cost-reducing strategies among the US adult population with and without diabetes that may impact CRN. METHODS: Data from the 2013 wave of National Health Interview Survey (n=34,557) were used to identify the independent impact of p…

American Muslim Perceptions of Healing
American Muslims represent a growing and diverse community. Efforts at promoting cultural competence, enhancing cross-cultural communication skills, and improving community health must account for the religio-cultural frame through which American Muslims view healing. Using a community-based participatory research model, we conducted 13 focus groups at area mosques in southeast Michigan to explore American Muslim views on healing and to identify …

Chronically ill adults were asked to identify how often they underused prescription medication for 16 health conditions because of the cost. Results. Eighteen percent of respondents cut back on medication use owing to cost in the previous year, and 14% used less medication at least monthly. Although ra…

The Onchocerciasis Elimination Program for the Americas
The decision in 1987 by the pharmaceutical firm Merck & Co. to provide Mectizan (ivermectin) free of charge to river blindness control programs has challenged the international public health community to find effective ways to distribute the drug to rural populations most affected by onchocerciasis. In the Americas, PAHO responded to that challenge by calling for the elimination of all morbidity from onchocerciasis from the Region by the year 200…

Racial Disparities in Diabetes Care Processes, Outcomes, and Treatment Intensity
BACKGROUND: Black Americans with diabetes have a higher burden of illness and mortality than do white Americans. However, the extent to which differences in medical care processes and treatment intensity contribute to poorer diabetes outcomes is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess racial disparities in the quality of diabetes care processes, intermediate outcomes, and treatment intensity. METHODS: We conducted an observational study of 801 white and 11…

The Health Effects of Restricting Prescription Medication Use Because of Cost
BACKGROUND: High out-of-pocket expenditures for prescription medications could lead people with chronic illnesses to restrict their use of these medications. Whether adults experience adverse health outcomes after having restricted medication use because of cost is not known. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2 prospective cohort studies of adults who reported regularly taking prescription medications using 2 waves of the Health and Retirement Study…

Routine HIV Testing in Botswana
BACKGROUND: The Botswana government recently implemented a policy of routine or "opt-out" HIV testing in response to the high prevalence of HIV infection, estimated at 37% of adults. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a cross-sectional, population-based study of 1,268 adults from five districts in Botswana to assess knowledge of and attitudes toward routine testing, correlates of HIV testing, and barriers and facilitators to testing, 11 months af…

Food Insufficiency Is Associated with High-Risk Sexual Behavior among Women in Botswana and Swaziland
BACKGROUND: Both food insufficiency and HIV infection are major public health problems in sub-Saharan Africa, yet the impact of food insufficiency on HIV risk behavior has not been systematically investigated. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, coded and analysed for themes. Subjects Subjects include…

Wolfe Et Al. Respond
Gamper et al. raise an important concern regarding our sample. As we noted in our limitations section, although individuals were randomly selected from the 5 districts of Botswana with the highest number of HIV infected individuals, we did not sample from the more remote districts of Botswana, limiting the generalizability of our results. It is important to note, however, that the outcome of greatest interest in our study is the one showing an as…

Hospitalizations and Deaths Among Adults With Cardiovascular Disease Who Underuse Medications Because of Cost
CONTEXT: It is well-documented that the financial burden of out-of-pocket expenditures for prescription drugs often leads people with medication-sensitive chronic illnesses to restrict their use of these medications. Less is known about the extent to which such cost-related medication underuse is associated with increases in subsequent hospitalizations and deaths. OBJECTIVE: We compared the risk of hospitalizations among 5401 and of death among 6…
