Chronic Strain, Coping Style, and Mental Health in Emerging Adulthood: Considering Age-Linked Patterns in the Stress Process
Using longitudinal data from two cohorts of emerging adults (mean ages 17.5 and 21.7), we examined whether chronic strain exposure mediated age-cohort effects, and/or yielded age-cohort-moderated effects, on psychological distress; whether problem-, emotion-, and/or avoidance-oriented coping styles mediated and/or moderated chronic strain effects on distress; and whether those coping styles yielded age-cohort-moderated effects on distress net of …
Anticipated Guilt and Parenting: An Etiological Approach to the Sex Gap in Delinquency
Racial differences in legal socialization models across adolescence and emerging adulthood
OBJECTIVE: White and non-White adolescents report different experiences in the legal system. This disparity impacts their evaluations of, and attitudes toward, legal authorities such that non-White and older adolescents tend to perceive the legal system more negatively. Yet, many researchers assume that the process of legal socialization, which involves internalizing norms and information about the law and the legal system, is universal for all a…
Emotion: The forgotten component of legal socialization
Legal socialization researchers have largely ignored the importance of emotion in the legal socialization process and engagement in crime. The purpose of the current study was to argue the potential importance of moral emotions (e.g., guilt) in legal socialization and take a preliminary step to integrate an emotion component into an existing model. The current study investigated whether the moral emotion of guilt, using both proneness and anticip…
Adolescents’ Future Aspirations and Expectations in the Context of a Shifting Rural Economy
Perpetration of sibling aggression and sibling relationship quality in emerging adulthood
This study examined how emerging adults' perpetration of aggression toward a sibling closest in age was longitudinally associated with their sibling relationship quality. Emerging adults ( N = 143; M age = 19.62; 70% female) completed surveys online or by mail at two time points, 4 years apart. Of emerging adults, 25% perpetrated aggression against their closest‐in‐age sibling. Perpetration of sibling aggression was predictive 4 years later of le…
No Guts, No Glory: The Influence of Risk-taking on Adolescent Popularity
Existing research finds adolescent popularity to be correlated with risk-taking. While a subset of this research uses longitudinal methods to examine whether part of this correlation may reflect the influence of popularity on risk-taking, research has paid insufficient attention to examining the reverse relation. Drawing on literature from a range of disciplines, we argue that a portion of the correlation reflects the positive influence of risk-t…
The rural context of substance misuse in the United States
This chapter explores if changes in unemployment during this period coincided with changes in substance misuse among rural emerging adults nationally and locally. It seeks to add to a growing literature on uniquely rural patterns of substance misuse, with an emphasis on rural American youth in transition to adulthood between 2009 and 2014. The chapter uses both quantitative and qualitative data to explore the possible link between unemployment an…
Household chaos, relationships with parents and adolescents’ future beliefs
This article examines whether adolescents’ experience of household chaos is related to their future beliefs (i.e. mastery of the future, future obstacles, stress about transition to emerging adulthood, parents’ ability to ‘let go', and likelihood of having a successful career). It also explores whether adolescents’ relationships with their mothers and fathers (i.e. warmth, hostility) moderate the link between household chaos and adolescents’ futu…
Perceived Local Job Prospects and School Connectedness in a Struggling Rural Economy: A Life-Course Perspective
Late in first decade of the 2000s, the closing of pulp and paper mills in the rural northeastern United States contributed to economic decline in the region and to rising concerns about population decline due to out-migration among local emerging adults in search of occupational or educational opportunities. In this context, and drawing on a life-course framework, the present study used four waves of panel data from the population of 7th- and 11t…
The relationship between gender and delinquency: Assessing the mediating role of anticipated guilt
Breadth of Participation in Organized and Unstructured Leisure Activities Over Time and Rural Adolescents’ Functioning
Socioeconomic Strain, Family Ties, and Adolescent Health in a Rural Northeastern County
In adolescence, vital sources of support come from family relationships; however, research that considers the health-related impact of ties to both parents and siblings is sparse, and the utility of such ties among at-risk teens is not well understood. Here we use two waves of panel data from the population of 8th and 12th grade students in a geographically isolated, rural, northeastern U.S. county to assess whether socioeconomic status (SES) mod…
Rationalizing Delinquency: A Longitudinal Test of the Reciprocal Relationship Between Delinquent Attitudes and Behavior
Multiple criminological theories predict that attitudes toward delinquency should affect an individual’s delinquent behavior. Criminological research, however, has not sufficiently incorporated social psychological theory predicting the reverse causal relationship, and tends to suffer from important methodological limitations. The present study addresses these issues using longitudinal data from the New Hampshire Youth Study (N = 626). After usin…
Practical Considerations: Community Context in a Declining Rural Economy and Emerging Adults’ Educational and Occupational Aspirations
We examine how aspects of community context (i.e., social and familial attachments, attachment to place, and economic environment) are linked to rural emerging adults’ educational and occupational experiences and aspirations. We use a year of qualitative interview data and 2 years of longitudinal survey data to explore how community context may shape two groups of rural emerging adults’ aspirations for those who remain in their rural home communi…

Perceived injustice and delinquency: A test of general strain theory
Perceived Community Cohesion and the Stress Process in Youth
Using survey data from two youth samples, one rural and one urban, we examine the role and significance of perceived community cohesion in the stress process. In particular, we assess the extent to which community attachment and detachment are related to depressed mood, problem substance use, and delinquency net of social statuses, stress exposure, and personal attributes. In addition, we explore the degree to which those dimensions of community …
