Globale Momente, nationale Interessen.

Yair Mintzker. The Many Deaths of Jew Süss
Yair Mintzker’s The Many Deaths of Jew Süss: The Notorious Trial and Execution of an Eighteenth-Century Court Jew examines one of the key figures in the history of German antisemitism. A few days after the sudden death of Duke Carl Alexander of Württemberg in 1737, Joseph Süß Oppenheimer was arrested. After a long trial he was sentenced to death and strangled to death in public, February 4, 1738. What the fictional character Shylock is to the Bri…
Moral, Kapitalismus und soziale Bewegungen. Kulturhistorische Annäherungen an einen ‚alten‘ Gegenstand
The article is presenting an argument to look at the history of capitalism through the lens of moral ideas and moral movements. The authors argue that capitalism cannot be understood as an economic system alone but as a cultural system that relied on morality as justification whilst, at the same time, its critics also used moral arguments to attack the alleged immorality of capitalism. Making use of E. P. Thompson’s concept of the ‘moral economy’…

Von Käfern, Märkten und Menschen
Ambivalente Gefühle
Anti-Semitism as trumpeted by Artur Dinter's "Sin against Blood" (1918) and Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" (1925) aimed at disseminating and popularising concepts of racial purity. This article argues that emotional mechanisms are central elements of antisemitism which link negative emotions such as disgust with images of the "Jew". Although this discursive practice shaped decisions in Nazi Courts of Law, practices of shaming became the driving forc…
The Emotional Bond of Brotherliness
In the 1930s, not far from the Hanse city of Hamburg, Johann Hinrich Wichern set up the German Home Mission movement (Innere Mission). The brotherhood of the Rauhes Haus was a central pillar of the movement. The brothers worked as city missioners, and carried out religious social work as the leaders of care homes and hostels for the homeless among the very poorest in society. This article describes both the institutional structure of the new brot…
