    Of the various types of ruins, some are precipitated by nature and time, but others, more violently, in conflict and war. Such ruins act as signs of wasteful and destructive human acts, and often carry hortatory overtones for the viewer. The ruin, far from being a ‘mark of peace’ (as Simmel, in his classic article suggests), is a sign that warns of man's violent nature.
