Reconstructing deposits and recontextualising artefacts at Creag a' Chapuill Cave, Skye
Enthroned and Coming to Reign
Many interpreters hold that Jesus’s response to the high priest (Mark 14:62), combining Ps 110:1 and Dan 7:13, refers to his imminent heavenly enthronement and says nothing of his future return. Many others recognize a reference to Jesus’s parousia but see this solely in the allusion to Dan 7:13 (“coming with the clouds”), rather than in anything drawn from Ps 110. In contrast to these views, we argue that Ps 110 provides a key to understanding J…
The Radical Journalists of the Midlands in the Early 1790s
Despite much recent work on the British newspaper press there is still much ground to be explored about the political activities of regional journalists in their local areas – as opposed to their metropolitan counterparts. This article examines the five radical newspapers published in three midlands towns in the early 1790s. While examining the journalists’ stance on the key national issues of the day the article also places their newspapers in t…

Reading landscape’
This paper outlines a collaborative project between a group of Fine Art and Geography students who helped develop and contribute to a conversation about recording ‘place’. Introducing methodologies from both disciplines, the project started from the premise of all environmental ‘recordings’ being ‘inputs’ and so questioned what could be defined as ‘data’ when encountering a location. Brunel’s Grand Entrance to the Thames Tunnel (London) provided …

Contested Rights
To seriously consider one's rights under the US Constitution, one must grapple with the realization that many rights are not absolute. Instead, they are contested. But how to introduce younger students to such a complex concept, given short attention spans? In this article, we discuss the opportunities, pitfalls, and planning logistics of the 2013 Constitution Day celebration at Emporia State University, a regional university in Kansas. Contested…

Manual mapping of drumlins in synthetic landscapes to assess operator effectiveness
Mapped topographic features are important for understanding processes that sculpt the Earth's surface. This paper presents maps that are the primary product of an exercise that brought together 27 researchers with an interest in landform mapping wherein the efficacy and causes of variation in mapping were tested using novel synthetic DEMs containing drumlins. The variation between interpreters (e.g. mapping philosophy, experience) and across the …
Bibliographic webmap
In this article, we present the development of a web mapping application as part of the ‘Physical Landscape of Britain and Northern Ireland’ project. There are a large number of sources for information and data on the geomorphology of the British landscape including academic journals, books, unpublished student dissertations and third-party reports, however there remains no single central repository to query the extent of such knowledge. This pro…
Glacial striae observations for Ireland compiled from historic records
Please click here to download the map associated with this article. Glacial landform mapping is one of the primary inputs for the reconstruction of past glacial environments and processes, potentially inferring maximum ice sheet extent and dynamics. Depositional landforms (e.g. drumlins, end moraines, ribbed moraines, eskers) are often used to infer former ice sheet conditions, with erosional indicators receiving less attention. For nearly 200 ye…
Glacial geomorphological maps of the Glasgow region, western central Scotland
Please click here to download the map associated with this article. This paper presents a 1:25,000 scale geomorphological map of the Glasgow region, western central Scotland, an area that was glaciated during the Last Glacial Maximum and, in part, during the Younger Dryas glaciation. The text accompanying the map sets out the historical context of the mapping exercise and describes the process of geomorphological mapping at 1:10,560 scale. The te…
Introduction to the Journal of Maps Student Edition
This editorial introduces material for the launch edition of the Journal of Maps Student Edition. The Journal of Maps seeks to create greater exposure, and provide publishing opportunities, for researchers that have produced map content that would otherwise remain unpublished. To this end the journal is open access and, due to the all-encompassing inter-disciplinary nature of “maps”, publishes on a wide-range of topics. The Student Edition is tar…
The Journal of Maps
Maps have been central to the research goals of spatial disciplines for over 150 years; to store, analyse and present geographical information. This paper outlines the importance of mapping as a fundamental tool of geographical enquiry yet highlights the subsequent decline in their published form. The Journal of Maps is an attempt to redress the balance and provide an outlet for publication of maps of all types; an antidote to the malaise in map …

Let Specificity, Clarity, and Parsimony of Purpose Be Our Guide
The decisional rules embedded in presumptive guideline grids have achieved some of their drafters' objectives, but fall short of a ``rule of law'' for sentencing – a paramount goal of the sentencing reforms Marvin Frankel set in motion twenty‐five years ago. The rule of law requires a reasoning process that moves from penal purpose to penal measure, by fair inference from relevant facts. Two‐dimensional grid guideline schemes gain simplicity by r…
