  • The Value and Access of Urban Greenspace

Open Access•Shujuan Li, Alden Stoner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

In studying greenspace and people's health and wellbeing, the self-report health perception survey method is broadly used. There is a consensus that people's health and wellbeing are positively associated with greenspace exposure. Meanwhile, different conclusions on details related to greenspace exposure have also been reported, e.g., the frequency and the stay time. Few studies have investigated and compared on-site greenspace exposure and off-s…

  • Is Greener Better? Quantifying the Impact of a Nature Walk on Stress Reduction Using HRV and Saliva Cortisol Biomarkers

Open Access•Shravan Aras, J Ray Runyon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

The physiological impact of walking in nature was quantified via continuous heart rate variability (HRV), pre- and post-walk saliva cortisol measures, and self-reported mood and mindfulness scores for N = 17 participants who walked "The Green Road" at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. For N = 15 of the participants, HRV analysis revealed two main groups: group one individuals had a 104% increase (mean) in the roo…

  • Personality, workstation type, task focus, and happiness in the workplace

Open Access•Erica Baranski, Casey Lindberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2023•References: 66

The current study adds to the emerging interest in workplace person-environmental associations by exploring the interaction between employee personality traits and office workstation type (open bench seating, cubicle, private office) in predicting on-task focus and happiness. To capture an ecologically valid assessment of such interactions, 231 federal office workers completed momentary and global, one-time surveys. While global focus ratings wer…

  • Trauma, place, and transformation

Open Access•Esther Sternberg, Esther M Sternberg et al.•ARTICLE•Archive for the Psychology of…•2019

This commentary comprises three different responses to Counted and Zock’s article: “Place Spirituality: An Attachment Perspective.” The first response is from Esther Sternberg, MD, who gives a psychophysiological and neuroscience critique. The second is from Altaf Engineer, PhD, from the perspective of architecture and environmental psychology, and the last response is from Hester Oberman, PhD, who gives a psychology of religion rebuttal

  • African American Elders' Serious Illness Experiences

    Open Access•Heather Coats, Janice D Crist et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 41

The foundation of culturally sensitive patient-centered palliative care is formed from one's social, spiritual, psychological, and physical experiences of serious illness. The purpose of this study was to describe categories and patterns of psychological, social, and spiritual healing from the perspectives of aging seriously ill African American (AA) elders. Using narrative analysis methodology, 13 open-ended interviews were collected. Three main…

  • The Lourdes Medical Cures Revisited

Bernard Francois, Esther Sternberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2014•Cited by: 1

This article examines the cures recorded in Lourdes, France, between 1858, the year of the Visions, and 1976, the date of the last certified cure of the twentieth century. Initially, the records of cures were crude or nonexistent, and allegations of cures were accepted without question. A Medical Bureau was established in 1883 to examine and certify the cures, and the medical methodology improved steadily in the subsequent years. We discuss the c…

  • The Nature of Life-Transforming Changes Among Cancer Survivors

    Open Access•Perry Skeath, Shanti Norri et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 46

Some cancer survivors report positive subjective changes they describe as "life transforming." We used a grounded theory approach to identify the content, underlying process, and identifying characteristics of self-defined "life-transforming" changes (LTCs) reported by 9 cancer survivors. To actualize their hopes for improvement, participants used a self-guided process centered on pragmatic action: researching options, gaining experience, and fra…

  • Atwood Et Al. Respond

Allison Atwood, A Marella Atwood et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2003•References: 4

The article to which Ulett is responding took a historical perspective, and the biological issues he raises are somewhat tangential to the point of the original. Nonetheless, we believe that he is incorrect in stating that there is no validity to ancient Chinese approaches to the practice of acupuncture. Indeed, the very references he cites strongly support the biological basis for acupuncture, over and above a nonspecific placebo effect. Thus, 2…
