  • Religion and the Covid-19 pandemic

    C E Lorea, Neena Mahadev et al.•ARTICLE•Religion•2022•Cited by: 9•References: 35

This introduction opens a collection of seven articles which investigate how religious communities negotiate demands for physical distance induced by governmental responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in accord with their religious and spiritual aspirations to establish presence and togetherness. Grounded in ethnography and media analysis, our contributors offer studies on Pentecostal healing, Mormon eschatology, Hindu diasporic rituals, Chinese spi…

  • The Charism of the Christian Left

    Open Access•Neena Mahadev•ARTICLE•The Cambridge Journal of…•2022•Cited by: 2

Through ethnography of recent peaceful dissent by Catholic and Protestant activists, life histories, and a reading of a postcolonial archive of contextually grounded liberation theology, I explore the theopolitics of grace that fuels the habits and habitus of Sri Lanka's ecumenical left. Pluralistic and indigenised forms of Christianity emerged in the era of decolonisation and nationalisation and were emboldened by Vatican II. Distinguishing ecum…

  • Post-war Blood

    Open Access•Neena Mahadev•ARTICLE•Religion and Society•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 38

Since 2009, in the aftermath of Sri Lanka's ethnic war, certain contingents of Sinhala Buddhists have lodged attacks against religious minorities, whom they censure for committing violence against animals in accordance with the dictates of their gods. Considering these interventions against sacrifice in spaces of shared Hindu and Buddhist religiosity, this article examines the economies of derogation, violence, and scapegoating in post-war Sri La…

  • Karma and grace

    Open Access•Neena Mahadev•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 43

Karma and grace are grammars for material and moral being, each offering onto-cosmological justification for the vicissitudes of destiny. Beyond their scriptural renderings, karma and grace are vernacular cosmologies, which in Sri Lanka, are engaged as repertoires of judgment, reckoning, and discernment of causes of fortune and misfortune. This paper ventures to compare and contrast karma and grace. It queries the agonistic intersection between e…

  • Economies of Conversion and Ontologies of Religious Difference

    Neena Mahadev•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 43

Conflicts over conversion often involve divergent logics about religious publicity and persuasion. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, Sri Lankan Buddhists began expressing renewed hostility toward Christians, who are seen as "unethically" converting Sri Lankans away from their native religions. They see the material accoutrements of Christian grace as estranging Buddhists from righteous, karmic inheritances. Distinctive economies of religi…

  • The maverick dialogics of religious rivalry in Sri Lanka

    Open Access•Neena Mahadev•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 48

A strand of Sri Lankan Buddhist revivalism that emerged in 2008 offers an unconventional rejoinder to evangelical efforts to intensify conversions. Pentecostals assert that Christ offers instantaneous salvation whereas Theravāda Buddhism demands slow passage through many lifetimes of suffering. In contrast to concomitant political efforts to curb conversions, one maverick Buddhist monk implicitly responded to such competitive theological provocat…
