  • Bastard Feudalism

    M A Hicks•BOOK•Bastard Feudalism•2013

This major work is the most radical reinterpretation of the subject for fifty years. Hicks argues that Bastard Feudalism was far more complex - and positive in its effects - than previous accounts have suggested. A major contribution to historical debate which revolutionises our view of late medieval society.

This article questions the current orthodoxy that the hegemony of the earls of Warwick in the West Midlands collapsed during the minorities of Duke Henry and his daughter Anne in 1439-49 (the Beauchamp Interregnum) and was never successfully reconstructed. Using inquisitions post mortem and other chance surviving records, it demonstrates that the estate remained intact and was run throughout by the duke himself and the custodians and feoffees of …

The long‐term aim of the project is to excavate the entire central area of the Dilmun settlement. During the 1994 and 1995 seasons a further twelve buildings were excavated, most of them located along the main arteries of the settlement. A resistivity survey, followed by selective excavation, determined the size and extent of the site. A well excavated on the eastern flank provided valuable information about the level of Bahrain's aquifers in the…

During 1993, the London‐Bahrain Archaeological Expedition conducted a fourth season of excavations at the early second millennium settlement of Saar, Bahrain. It is notoriously difficult for biographers of late-medieval people to recapture the personalities of their subjects, and consequently motives often have to be deduced from actions. This fundamental difficulty prompted the great Professor Jacob Burckhardt to date the emergence of the individual from the Renaissance and to assert that, rulers apart, there were few developed personalities in the Middle Ages. Medieval people saw their world through …
