British Military Music in Battle during the Napoleonic Wars
This article investigates the presence and significance of British military music in action during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Based on a diverse body of sources, including contemporary military manuals, archival collections, and soldiers’ memoirs, it argues that regimental bands did not normally strike up in the heat of battle. Highland pipers, on the other hand, were celebrated for playing in combat. Bugles and trumpets were c…
Military music and society during the French wars, 1793-1815
The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars were experienced by the ears as much as the eyes, yet the auditory dimensions of these conflicts have received limited attention from historians. This article interrogates the reach and reception of military music in wartime Britain and Ireland by drawing on a wealth of evidence from memoirs, diaries, press reports and regimental archives. It demonstrates that military bands provided sought-after enter…
The geomorphology of Ireland’s continental shelf
The Irish Shelf Seabed Geomorphological Map (ISSGM) (v2023) presented here, is the first high-resolution geomorphological map of the entire Irish continental shelf. This large-scale mapping exercise took advantage of the vast INFOMAR multibeam echosounder dataset, and used a protocol of semi-automated mapping techniques to accurately and rapidly extract seabed features. All previous mapping efforts and existing literature on the Irish shallow she…
A natural passion?' The 1810 reflections of a Yorkshire farmer on homosexuality
In a newly discovered passage from an 1810 diary, Yorkshire tenant farmer Matthew Tomlinson considers the notion that homosexual desire is a natural, divinely ordained human tendency, discernible from adolescence and undeserving of capital punishment. Although ultimately inconclusive, his reflections offer tantalizing evidence that historical attitudes towards same-sex love in early nineteenth-century British society could be more diverse and sym…
Geomorphology and substrate of Galway Bay, Western Ireland
A combination of multibeam bathymetry and backscatter, LiDAR altimetry and bathymetry, satellite images, and hydrodynamic model outputs were used to map the seafloor and coastline of Galway Bay (western Ireland). This is the first time these multiple datasets have been integrated into a single combined geomorphological and substrate map. The substrate of the bay is predominantly mud and sand with bedrock outcropping extensively around the coastli…
