The East India Company and Britain’s Interest in Vietnam’s Trading Ports in the early modern period
Vietnam’s trading port system played a vital role in the pre-modern period from the British perspective. By examining primary sources such as documents from the English East India Company dating back to the 17th century, and English journals, diaries, and memos from the 17th to the 19th centuries, we can see the importance of Vietnam’s trading ports and how the British perceived them differently over three centuries. The Role of Tonkin and Taiwan in the English East India Company’s East Asian Commercial Strategy in the Late Seventeenth Century: A Comparative Perspective
In 1672, the English East India Company set up factories in Taiwan and Tonkin. The Taiwan factory lasted only for 11 years (1672 – 1683), but the Tonkin branch operated for 25 years (1672 – 1697). Both factories had a similar role in the English East Asian commercial strategy as they served as intermediaries for trading indirectly with mainland China and Japan. Initially, the two factories were established to support English trade in Japan. Howev…

Anglo–Vietnamese diplomatic relationship in the seventeenth century: The case of the English East India Company
Drawing on primary materials from the English East India Company (EIC) archives in the British Library (London, UK), this article investigates the early diplomatic encounters between England and Vietnam (Tonkin and Cochinchina) in the seventeenth century. Previous studies have mostly focused on the English trade in Vietnam in that period and their diplomatic missions from the late eighteenth century to 1858 but partly neglected their diplomacy in…
China-US Strategic Competition in the Lower Mekong Region and Vietnam’s Position
Recently, both China and the United States of America (US) have started focusing more on settling influence in the Lower Mekong region in the general context of global China-US competition. Although they have different connecting approaches, both superpowers focus on establishing and maintaining their influence in the strategic geo-political area in Southeast Asia and Asia. Their activities in the Lower Mekong region are more noticeable since the…
The English East India Company and Cochinchina (1614–1705): From free trade to coercion
By investigating English primary materials kept in the India Office Records, this study reviews relations between the English East India Company and Cochinchina (1614–1705) to argue that the Company changed its connecting strategy towards Cochinchina from commercial and diplomatic approaches to more aggressive methods.
