Work-Related Psychosocial Factors and Global Cognitive Function: Are Telomere Length and Low-Grade Inflammation Potential Mediators of This Association
The identification of modifiable factors that could maintain cognitive function is a public health priority. It is thought that some work-related psychosocial factors help developing cognitive reserve through high intellectual complexity. However, they also have well-known adverse health effects and are considered to be chronic psychosocial stressors. Indeed, these stressors could increase low-grade inflammation and promote oxidative stress assoc…
Understanding and attenuating pandemic-related disruptions: A plan to reduce inequalities in child development
The Secretary General of the United Nations described the impact of COVID-19-related school closures as a "generational catastrophe." What will be the legacy of the 2020-2021 pandemic-related disruptions in 5, 10, 20 years from now, as regards education and well-being of children and youth? Addressing the disproportionate impact on those growing up in socio-economically disadvantaged areas or on those with pre-existing learning challenges is key …

Psychosocial work factors and social inequalities in psychological distress: A population-based study
These results suggest that psychosocial work factors from the DCS and the ERI models contribute to explain a part of social inequalities in psychological distress among men. Psychosocial factors at work are frequent and modifiable. The present study supports the relevance of targeting these factors for the primary prevention of MHP and for health policies aiming to reduce social inequalities in mental health
Adverse psychosocial work factors, blood pressure and hypertension incidence: Repeated exposure in a 5-year prospective cohort study
BACKGROUND: Two main theoretical models have been used to assess the impact of psychosocial work factors on blood pressure (BP): the demand-control (DC) model and the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model. Previous studies have mostly used a single time point exposure to examine this association. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of repeated job strain and ERI exposure on (1) ambulatory BP (ABP) evolution over 5 years and (2) hypertension incidence …
Tenofovir-Based Preexposure Prophylaxis for HIV Infection among African Women
BACKGROUND: Reproductive-age women need effective interventions to prevent the acquisition of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled trial to assess daily treatment with oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), oral tenofovir-emtricitabine (TDF-FTC), or 1% tenofovir (TFV) vaginal gel as preexposure prophylaxis against HIV-1 infection in women in South Africa, Uganda, and Zimb…

HIV and ethnicity in Canada: Is the HIV risk-taking behaviour of young foreign-born MSM similar to Canadian born MSM
There is a dearth of information on the HIV risk-taking behaviour of foreign-born men who have sex with men (MSM) in Canada. This study focused on identifying sexual risk behaviour among MSM who immigrated to Canada and compared them to MSM who were born in Canada. Baseline data from the Omega Cohort in Montreal and the Vanguard Project in Vancouver were combined to form four ethnicity/race analytical categories (n = 1,148): White born in Canada …
Effects of Job Strain on Blood Pressure: A Prospective Study of Male and Female White-Collar Workers
Objectives. We evaluated whether cumulative exposure to job strain increases blood pressure. Methods. A prospective study of 8395 white-collar workers was initiated during 1991 to 1993. At follow-up, 7.5 years later, 84% of the participants were reassessed to estimate cumulative exposure to job strain. Results. Compared with men who had never been exposed, men with cumulative exposure and those who became exposed during follow-up showed significa…
Psychologic Distress in Postmyocardial Infarction Patients Who Have Returned to Work
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of psychologic distress in women and men returning to work after a myocardial infarction (MI) and to compare this prevalence with the prevalence observed among men and women of the general working population. METHODS: The study population was composed of 990 post-MI patients (106 women and 884 men) recruited in 30 hospitals who had returned to work after their first MI. Psychologic distress was measured with th…

Effect of Family Responsibilities and Job Strain on Ambulatory Blood Pressure Among White-Collar Women
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine whether large family responsibilities and their combination with high job strain were associated with an increase in ambulatory blood pressure (BP) among white-collar women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a stratified random sample of 199 white-collar women with or without children who were employed full time in jobs involving high or low strain. These women were selected from a …

Income, body fatness, and fat patterns in Hispanic women from the Hispanic health and nutrition examination survey
Using data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES) (National Center for Health Statistics, 1985), we examined the relationships of income to body fatness and centralized fat patterns in Hispanic women, ages 25–74 years. There were 1,552 Mexican‐American, 451 Cuban‐American, and 654 Puerto Rican women. We used linear regression to estimate models of body fatness for weight with the covariates standing and sitting heights…
