  • The afterlife of birth control policies in Mexico

    Open Access•Yolinliztli Pérez-Hernández, C Schurr•ARTICLE•GENDER – Zeitschrift für…•2025

We analyze the normalization of tubal ligation in Mexico by examining both the institutional perspective of health professionals and the experiences of racialized mestiza women who opt for sterilization. Using qualitative methods, we conducted in-depth interviews with 25 low-income mestiza women who underwent sterilization, and six health professionals. Additionally, we held three art-based workshops and conducted observation in a state-subsidize…

  • Geographies of reproductive justice

Open Access•C Schurr, Susanne Schultz et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Human Geography•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 38

Contemporary struggles for reproductive rights across the globe once more show how politics shape intimate reproductive experiences. The intersectional feminist concept of reproductive justice has become an important political and theoretical agenda to address power relations in the realm of reproductive rights. We argue that the justice-based approach of the concept can serve as an umbrella for debates taking place in diverse subdisciplinary fie…

  • An Autoethnographic Exploration of My Breast Cancer Journey

    Yolinliztli Pérez-Hernández•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2024

In this essay, I discuss my personal experience with breast cancer, exploring three intertwined choices: declining medical egg freezing, choosing not to bear children, and opting out of breast reconstruction after a double mastectomy. Through autoethnography, I narrate how being an immigrant Latina cisgender lesbian in Europe influenced my decision-making processes. Challenging common assumptions about the invariably negative emotional impact on …

  • Egg freezing, genetic relatedness, and motherhood

    Open Access•Yolinliztli Pérez-Hernández, Yolinliztli Pérez‐Hernández et al.•ARTICLE•Bioethics•2024

Genetic relatedness figures heavily in contemporary ethical debates on egg freezing, although the arguments lack empirical‐based evidence. Rather than adding another theoretical view on the moral relevance of genetic connections, this paper instead proposes an empirically grounded perspective based on two independent qualitative interview‐based studies conducted in Belgium and France. Three themes emerge from our empirical data: (1) prioritizing …

  • Exploring Medical Egg Freezing as a Disease Management Strategy

    Yolinliztli Pérez-Hernández•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2023•References: 51

Medical egg freezing (MEF) allows women with fertility-threatening diseases to have their oocytes cryopreserved and stored for later use. Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease that might cause infertility. Qualitative research on endometriosis patients' experiences with MEF is minimal. I report on in-depth interviews among French endometriosis patients undertaking MEF. Their experiences are profoundly shaped by endometriosis-related pai…

    Open Access•Yolinliztli Pérez Hernández, Yolinliztli Pérez-Hernández•ARTICLE•Debate Feminista•2018•Cited by: 3

    Open Access•Yolinliztli Pérez-Hernández, Yolinliztli Pérez•ARTICLE•Sexualidad Salud y Sociedad (Rio…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 13
