  • Familiarity and literal plausibility, not transparency, drive idiom comprehension in adult readers with low literacy skills in Easy German

Open Access•Lena Wieland, Ingo Reich•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Language Sciences•2026

Introduction Easy German (Leichte Sprache) is a rule-guided variety of German intended to increase the accessibility of written information for people with cognitive disabilities and adults with low literacy skills. Although existing guidelines often discourage the use of idioms, experimental evidence on idiom processing in these target groups remains scarce. We investigated how literacy, functional familiarity, transparency, and literal plausibi…

  • On the omission of articles and copulae in German newspaper headlines

    Ingo Reich•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper argues based on a corpus-linguistic study that both omitted articles and copulae in German headlines are to be treated as null elements NA and NC. Both items need to be licensed by a specific (parsing) strategy known as discourse orientation (Huang, 1984), which is also applicable in the special register of headlines. It is shown that distinguishing between discourse and sentence orientation and correlating these two strategies with λ-…

  • Question/Answer Congruence and the Semantics of wh-phrases

    Ingo Reich•ARTICLE•Theoretical Linguistics•2002

This paper is about the semantics of wh-phrases. It is argued that wh-phrases should not be analyzed as indefinites as, for example, Karttunen (1977) and many others have done, but as functional expressions with an indefinite core —their function being to restrict possible focus/background structures in direct or congruent answers. This will be argued for on the basis of observations made with respect to the distribution of term answers in well-f…
