  • Llanito: Neither language nor emerging variety

    Open Access•Víctor Lara Bermejo•ARTICLE•Russian Journal of Linguistics•2026

This paper addresses the so-called Llanito , a type of Spanglish spoken in the British colony of Gibraltar. Llanito has been repeatedly defined as a linguistic variety, outcome of the contact between Spanish and English, and scholars support this claim by providing a list of words and referring to the identity feelings shared among the population. However, the data obtained from a fieldwork campaign suggest another reality. The aim of this articl…

  • El español saharaui: Caracterización dialectal

    Open Access•Víctor Lara Bermejo•ARTICLE•Lexis•2025

  • The history of second-person pronouns in European Portuguese

    Open Access•Víctor Lara Bermejo•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Pragmatics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 4

European Portuguese is known for the complexity of its second-person pronouns system. Despite this fact, there are not many works that deal with its evolution, since most analyses focus on case studies. In this article, I aim to pinpoint the diachrony of the second-person pronominal system of European Portuguese through the analysis of a corpus consisting of letters that cover the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The data will be compared to …

  • The emergence and history oftuteo, voseoandustedeo

    Open Access•Víctor Lara Bermejo•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 22

The second person pronouns in Spanish have exhibited numerous variants along its history, not only regarding its stressed forms, but also the agreement that emerges in the inflecting elements that anchor these stressed pronouns. Despite the quantity of studies carried out aboutvoseo, tuteoandustedeo, none of them has argued what grammatical reasons underlie for so much variation, since they have focused on pragmatic and sociolinguistic patterns wi…

    Open Access•Víctor Lara Bermejo•ARTICLE•Lengua y Sociedad•2022

Open Access•Víctor Lara Bermejo, Víctor Lara Bermejo Víctor Lara Bermejo•ARTICLE•Borealis – An International…•2021

  • The geolinguistics of the Ibero-Romance comitative

Víctor Lara Bermejo, Víctor Lara•ARTICLE•Dialectologia et Geolinguistica•2019

The comitative represents a particular case in the Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula. Except for Catalan, the rest of varieties possess a redundant form inherited from the evolution of the Latin postposition plus the preposition con (‘with’). However, some authors point out a tendency that favours subject forms or even stressed object forms in persons in which the norm prohibits them. With the aim of finding the vernacular responses to t…

  • The politeness of você in European Portuguese

Víctor Lara Bermejo, Víctor Lara et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone…•2018

The employment of você in current European Portuguese is not clear. Although Brazilian Portuguese has specialised it as an informal pronoun in certain geographical areas within the country, the European variety presents its use in contexts which seem to be contradictory: informal address, formal address and pejorative address. Due to the lack of an in-depth study on the evolution of this form, we have collected data from three different corpora t…

  • Patrones de ergatividad en el español peninsular

Víctor Lara Bermejo, Víctor Lara•ARTICLE•Dialectologia et Geolinguistica•2017

Western Peninsular Spanish possesses a type of causative construction in which an intransitive lexeme is used as transitive. Specifically, the verbs caer (‘to fall’), quedar (‘to stay’) and entrar (‘to enter) can induce a direct object in detriment of the standard verbs tirar (‘to throw’), dejar (‘to leave’) and meter (‘to put in’). This phenomenon (called lability) has not been investigated in depth for Spanish and, with this paper I attempt to …

    Víctor Lara Bermejo•ARTICLE•Hispanic Research Journal•2017
