Small syntactic terminal nodes, large Vocabulary Items
In a series of papers within the framework of Distributed Morphology (DM), Calabrese (2012 et seq.) has convincingly argued that there is a link between the (a)thematicity and the (ir)regularity of verbal forms: the presence of a Theme Vowel (ThV) has a direct effect on the regularity of the respective verbal forms whereas its absence may cause allomorphy. However, Calabrese posits numerous postsyntactic processes and idiosyncratic rules, which –…
Athematic verbal forms in Italian
In a series of papers, Calabrese (2012ff) has convincingly argued that there is a link between the (a)thematicity and the (ir)regularity of verbal forms, cf. the regular and thematic past participles amato 'loved', battuto 'beaten' and partito 'left' vs. the irregular and athematic forms perso 'lost', corso 'run' and chiuso 'closed'. While we completely agree with Calabrese's observation that the presence of a Theme Vowel (ThV) has a direct effec…
Does French have theme vowels
Most Romance languages have reduced the Latin conjugation classes (CCs) maintaining only three main classes which are marked as general rule by different theme vowels (ThVs). The development in French, however, is different and has led to less transparent verbal forms and to a CC system that is not describable, at first glance, in terms of ThVs. In our contribution, we pursue the following questions: Does French have ThVs? And if so, which form d…
Romance Root Suppletion and Cumulative Exponence
This paper discusses verbal stem allomorphy in Romance within the framework of Distributed Morphology (DM). We will present several technical instruments provided by the framework, applying them to an analysis of Romance verbal forms, with a particular focus on stem suppletion with the verb go. We conclude that the best solution to the problem of form-function discrepancies, as they appear in suppletion (but not only), is a spanning approach. Thi…
Language Use and Linguistic Structure
The editors are grateful to all those who have helped make the fifth volume of the Proceedings of the Olomouc Linguistics Colloquium (and the ninth volume in the whole series) a reality.Above all, as always, we would like to thank all the authors for both their enthusiastic participation in the conference and their cooperation in the time-consuming editorial process. We would also like to express our immense gratitude to all the reviewers who devo…
Plural marking in French NA/AN combinations
Our paper discusses different patterns of plural marking in N(oun)A(djective)/A(djective)N(oun)-combinations in phonic French. We first show, based on previous observations, that French has incomplete plural agreement in complex nominal phrases and that there is a striking asymmetry between AN-combinations (plural marking on the determiner and prenominal adjectives via liaison , where possible) and NA-combinations (usually, only plural marking on…
Spanische Verbalflexion
This study presents an application of distributed morphology to Spanish verb inflections. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the whole system of both the regular and the irregular verbs of Spanish and aims to provide insights into the relation between the features of involved flective endings, the syntactic structure and the attendant morpho(phono)logical processes. The bare phrase structure model of generative grammar is used as the syntact…
