  • Rooting for food security in Sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Nicolas Guilpart, Patricio Grassini et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

There is a persistent narrative about the potential of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to be a 'grain breadbasket' because of large gaps between current low yields and yield potential with good management, and vast land resources with adequate rainfall. However, rigorous evaluation of the extent to which soils can support high, stable yields has been limited by lack of data on rootable soil depth of sufficient quality and spatial resolution. Here we use…

  • Can sub-Saharan Africa feed itself?

    Open Access•Martin K Van Ittersum, L G J van Bussel et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2016

Significance The question whether sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) can be self-sufficient in cereals by 2050 is of global relevance. Currently, SSA is amongst the (sub)continents with the largest gap between cereal consumption and production, whereas its projected tripling demand between 2010 and 2050 is much greater than in other continents. We show that nearly complete closure of the gap between current farm yields and yield potential is needed to main…

  • Climate change impact and adaptation research requires integrated assessment and farming systems analysis: A case study in the Netherlands

    Open Access•Pytrik Reidsma, J Wolf et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

Rather than on crop modelling only, climate change impact assessments in agriculture need to be based on integrated assessment and farming systems analysis, and account for adaptation at different levels. With a case study for Flevoland, the Netherlands, we illustrate that (1) crop models cannot account for all relevant climate change impacts and adaptation options, and (2) changes in technology, policy and prices have had and are likely to have …

  • Comparing conventional and organic agriculture in Karnataka, India: Where and when can organic farming be sustainable

  • Yield gap analysis with local to global relevance—A review

    Open Access•Martin K Van Ittersum, Kenneth G Cassman et al.•ARTICLE•Field Crops Research•2013

Yields of crops must increase substantially over the coming decades to keep pace with global food demand driven by population and income growth. Ultimately global food production capacity will be limited by the amount of land and water resources available and suitable for crop production, and by biophysical limits on crop growth. Quantifying food production capacity on every hectare of current farmland in a consistent and transparent manner is ne…

  • Perceptions of heatwave risks to health: Interview-based study of older people in London and Norwich, UK

Vanessa Abrahamson, J Wolf et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health•2008

BACKGROUND: Most projections of climate change suggest an increased frequency of heatwaves in England over coming decades; older people are at particular risk. This could result in substantial mortality and morbidity. OBJECTIVE: To determine elderly people's knowledge and perceptions of heat-related risks to health, and of protective behaviours. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews: 73 men and women, 72-94 years, living in their own homes in Londo…

  • Urban and peri-urban agricultural production in Beijing municipality and its impact on water quality

    Open Access•J Wolf, James M Wolf et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 1

This paper reviews water use and water resource issues in Beijing Municipality, the main trends in the agricultural production systems in and around the city with respect to land use, input use, production and economic role, and the impacts of agricultural activities on water quality. Rapid urbanization and strong intensification of agricultural production have meant that the quantity and quality of available water resources have become matters o…
