  • Long term variation of microphysical properties of black carbon in Beijing derived from observation and machine learning

Open Access•Kang Hu, Dantong Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

The microphysical attributes of black carbon (BC) can determine its absorption and hygroscopic properties. However, long-term information is difficult to obtain from the field. In this study, the BC properties including mass concentration, the coating volume ratio (VR) relative to the refractory BC (rBC), the rBC diameter and the fraction of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), are derived from a number of field experiments using a random forest mode…

  • The Influence of Media Democracy on Attitudes towards Homosexuality in Taiwan and China

Xinling Li, Kang Hu•ARTICLE•International Journal of Taiwan…•2024•References: 15

Using data collected in the seventh wave of the World Values Survey, this article examines how traditional and new media consumption have had very different effects on attitudes towards homosexuality in Taiwan and China. It further explores how such differences reflect each society’s media democracy. A historical analysis of the democratic movements and their relations to media freedom in Taiwan and China is presented, which provides the research…

  • Agentic values, generational contract, and elderly provisions in Taiwan and Hong Kong

Open Access•Raymond Kh Chan, Lih‐Rong Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Social Work and Policy Review•2020•References: 7

It is commonly believed that, in Chinese societies, respect for the elderly and communal values sustains a generational contract that benefits the older generation. Overt intergenerational conflict appears to be rare, though recent policy reforms have raised concerns about competing generational interests. Drawing on data from the sixth wave of the World Value Survey, we identified significant generational differences in values and in attitudes t…

  • Enhanced heating rate of black carbon above the planetary boundary layer over megacities in summertime

Open Access•Dantong Liu, Delong Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

The fast development of a secondary aerosol layer was observed over megacities in eastern Asia during summertime. Within three hours, from midday to early afternoon, the contribution of secondary aerosols above the planetary boundary layer (PBL) increased by a factor of three to five, and the coatings on black carbon (BC) also increased and enhanced its absorption efficiency by 50%. This tended to result from the intensive actinic flux received a…

  • The Effects of Media Use and Traditional Gender Role Beliefs on Tolerance of Homosexuality in China

    Kang Hu, Xinling Li•ARTICLE•Chinese Sociological Review•2019•Cited by: 15•References: 43

Using the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) data collected in 2015, this study investigates the effects of traditional media use and Internet use on tolerance of homosexuality, and the extent to which traditional gender role beliefs can moderate these effects. The results show that, while Internet use had a positive effect on tolerance of homosexuality, exposure to traditional media was likely to inhibit such tolerance. Moreover, traditional g…

  • Social Capital and Civic Engagement in Urban China

Open Access•Kang Hu, Raymond Kh Chan•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2012•Cited by: 2

Promoting civic engagement could be a way of strengthening the social solidarity of China's urban population. The drastic socio-economic changes resulting from recent economic reform are likely to have a deleterious effect on social solidarity. Based on a survey conducted in 2010 in the Southern China city of Xiamen, this paper examines a specific form of civic engagement - citizen cooperation - to resolve community problems, and assesses its rel…
