Impacts of global warming on subnational poverty and inequality
Higher temperatures are expected to impact globally on poverty and inequality, yet little cross-country analysis exists to quantify the effects. Here we analyse a panel dataset of subnational poverty in 130 countries covering the past decade and find that a 1 °C increase in temperature causes headcount poverty increases of 0.63–1.18 percentage points, using the daily poverty lines of US$2.15 (corresponding to 8.3% and 15.6% increases), and increa…
The growing divide
Rising out-of-pocket costs for psychotherapy in Australia have heightened concerns about financial barriers to mental healthcare, particularly for lower-income households, who disproportionately experience psychological distress. Using nation-wide linked administrative records of income and healthcare use, we estimate the magnitude of income-related inequity in psychotherapy use among 5.4 million individuals diagnosed with a mental health conditi…
The effects of home-country natural disasters on refugee mental health
The increased frequency of natural disasters and rising rates of mental disorders have become significant concerns globally. This paper examines their interrelation within a particularly disadvantaged group—refugees—who often maintain close ties to their home countries and may therefore be indirectly affected by adverse events, including natural disasters. We specifically investigate the impact of home-country natural disasters on the mental heal…
The impact of mobile internet on student cognitive performance during Covid
The rapid shift toward remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the important role of internet access in educational delivery. While this transition has facilitated educational continuity globally, it has also led to unintended consequences, especially in regions with variable digital readiness. This paper examines the causal relationship between mobile internet prevalence and cognitive performance among children aged 5–16 in …
Cycles of adversity
This study examines the causal relationship between exposure to father's joblessness during childhood and adolescence and experiencing energy poverty in adulthood using data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey. To address concerns that father's joblessness is endogenous, we employ the interaction between the average number of recessions that occurred in the period before the individual was age 14 and materna…
Weather effects on academic performance
This paper contributes to the growing body of research examining the impact of temperature on educational outcomes. Utilising national-level administrative data on nearly one million Australian students, it investigates whether temperature fluctuations, and prolonged heatwaves influence test performance. The analysis reveals that both heat and cold affect student test scores, with some evidence of the effects intensifying during heatwaves. Austra…
Are recessions bad for loneliness
Loneliness is a pressing public health concern with significant economic, health and social consequences. This paper examines the impact of economic downturns, particularly unemployment and job loss perception, on loneliness in Australia. Using a fixed-effects panel regression applied to 19 waves of data, we find that unemployment is significantly linked to an increased likelihood of experiencing loneliness and other dimensions of social health, …
The links between parental smoking and childhood obesity
Childhood obesity is one of the most concerning public health issues globally and its implications in mortality and morbidity in adulthood are increasingly important. This study uses a unique dataset of Australian children aged 4-16 to examine the impact of parental smoking on childhood obesity. It confirms a significant link between parental smoking (stronger for mothers) and higher obesity risk in children, regardless of income, age, family siz…
A financial disaster in the making
Research on climate change and its effects has seen a surge in interest as global temperatures continue to rise. A related body of literature focuses on the impact of weather on financial decisions. However, there is very little evidence on the channels through which temperature shocks affect savings. This is a significant shortcoming in the existing literature given the growing tendency among policymakers to use savings as an indicator of financ…
The Differential Impacts of Contingent Employment on Fertility
Many studies have reported evidence of negative associations between fixed-term contract employment and fertility. With few exceptions, these studies assume that employment status is exogenous and thus results are likely biased. Furthermore, previous research has mostly not considered whether the effects of employment status on fertility might vary with other worker characteristics. We draw on nineteen years of data from the Household, Income and…
Detecting Disasters and Disaster Recovery in Southeast Asia
This paper builds on the group of studies that have used satellite night light data to measure the impact of natural disasters on economic development. It examines the dynamics of disasters using monthly subnational-level data for Southeast Asian countries covering the period 2012–2018. Four issues are considered. First, the paper determines the proportion of disasters that can be detected through an exogenous structural break in the night light …
Political connections and post-disaster assistance in rural Vietnam
The Intergenerational Impacts of War
While adverse consequences of war for the generation who lived through the conflict have been well documented in the literature, the intergenerational impacts of war have received far less attention. We provide causal evidence on the impact of bombings during the Vietnam War on the prevalence of child labour among second-generation Vietnamese, defined as those born after the Vietnam War. Our preferred results, which instrument for bombing intensi…
The impact of lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic on fertility intentions
The Impact of the Pandemic on Gender Inequality in the Australian Labor Market
We examine whether the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the associated policy responses have aggravated gender inequality in the Australian labor market. Using quarterly data from the Australian Labour Force Survey between November 2019 and November 2021, we compare labor force outcomes before and during the outbreak. Our findings indicate that while women fared worse than men in the first few months of the pandemic, labor market recovery …
Effects of prenatal exposure to abnormal rainfall on cognitive development in Vietnam
Adverse shocks, household expenditure and child marriage
The effect of parental smoking on children’s cognitive and non-cognitive skills
The long-term impact of the Vietnam War on agricultural productivity
Mental Health Impacts of Child Labour
A number of recent studies have investigated the relationship between child labour and physical health. However, there has been little empirical evidence that child labour affects children’s emotional and behavioural development. This study departs from existing literature by examining the mental health impacts of child labour in Vietnam and India, as measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The potential endogeneity of child lab…
