Introduction slavery and colonialism in German cultural memory
German (post)colonialism in the Fugger and Welser Heritage Museum in Augsburg, Germany
Nurturing Transatlantic Ties
For us, John was a friend with whom we shared so many wonderful times in many countries. We miss discussing ideas with him, laughing with him, and exchanging good stories and adventures with him. Many a tale could be told about adventures we had together over the years. It all started with the idea of MELUS-Europe. When Heike returned from the MLA conference in the United States in 1995, she told Dorothea about a MELUS dinner where several people…

AfroAsian Encounters
As is always the case, this volume owes a large debt to a wide range of people who showed their genuine interest in the fundamental ideas of AfroAsian Encounters and participated with challenging discussions at many different sites and occasions. The inspiration for the project came, for Shannon, from a seminar with Harry Elam, without whom her area of research would never have materialized.Paul Spickard provided the initial impetus for our first …
German Entanglements in Transatlantic Slavery
Visualizing Protest
For Bisi Silva (1962–2019) Abstract This essay surveys a number of contemporary artworks that address the recent migrations and perilous water crossings of African people to Europe, made by artists of the African diaspora. Paying specific attention to the deployment of photography, time-based media, and installation, we argue that artists like Isaac Julien, Alexis Peskine, Romuald Hazoumè, and others disrupt the photojournalistic portrayals of Af…
Looking Back on the Vietnam War
The editors of this collection have assembled eleven essays that take a fresh look at the legacy of the Vietnam War. Since the 1990s, one can observe a renewed scholarly interest in the Vietnam War. This interest, as both editors claim, has been caused partly by the availability of new archival materials and partly by critical questions about the continuing influence of the war on later U.S. foreign politics and U.S. military operations during th…
Migrating the Black Body
The right to freedom
The essay retrieves the complex and at times contradictory encounters of Moravian missionaries, a Protestant group from Saxony, with enslaved Africans. For my investigation, I will single out both groups’ contact in the early eighteenth-century Danish West Indies and Dutch Suriname. I claim that, in their mission-related contacts during this specific period, both groups would receive glimpses of secular possibilities for future societies which ev…

German entanglements in transatlantic slavery
This essay aims at bringing together research on Germany’s colonial past and imperialist endeavors with current trends in scholarship in Atlantic history and slavery studies. While scholars of German history have begun to challenge what Jürgen Zimmerer has called the “colonial amnesia of Germans,” the transatlantic slave trade and New World slavery have rarely been included in discussions about national commemorative cultural debates because Germ…

Black Caribbean Empowerment and Early Eighteenth-Century Moravian Missions Documents
The article suggests a new reading of the documents related to the early period of eighteenth-century Moravians' missionary activities in the Danish West Indies that started in 1732. The early period of Moravian missionary presence – between the 1730s and 1760s – differed from subsequent periods because later periods lost the original attempts to establish spiritual equality. A close reading of the various documents allows one to detect forms of …
