Observations on Gender, Political Science, and the Academy
This address focuses on selected aspects of gender in political science and the academy. The marginalization of the study of women and politics is discussed. Comparisons with other disciplines suggest that the way in which political science has defined itself (by focusing on public behavior) limits its inclusiveness. The overt feminist perspectives of some women and politics scholars may also be a contributing factor. The academic environment at …
State Campaign Fund Raising
The extent to which campaign contributors are solicited by, and respond to, four different fund-raising techniques--direct mail, telephone, personal face-to-face, and group appeal--are reported. Data from contributors in two states indicate that there is significant variation in the use of all four modes of solicitation, and each apparently reaches and motivates somewhat different populations. The data also suggest that many contributors give wit…

Perceptions of Employment Discrimination in the Public Sector
D scrimination in employment has been the focus of much concern in recent years. Remedies for discrimination have rested on uncertain grounds because the nature of discrimination has been only partially explored. Discrimination is most usefully viewed from two perspectives. First there is the discrimination seen to exist by an observer (who is usually a non-participant) based on some pre-existing criteria (perhaps objectively derived) of what con…

Public Employee Unioniza Tion in the States
After briefly noting several problem areas for students of unionization, the authors focus on public employee perceptions of union impacts in five states. State public employee unions were found to be occupationally quite different from other public and private sector unions, with professional employees predominating. Stages of union development also emerged, with the breadth of union membership and the number of employees covered by union contra…

Opinion Publics and Support for Public Policy in the American States
This article is an examination of the direct linkage between public opinion and public policy in the American States. Nine policy areas at two points in time, and the opinion of four publics are included in the analysis. Thresholds of opinion support for policy enactment are empirically derived and found to vary substantially from the simple majoritarian notion of 50% + 1. The longitudinal analysis reveals higher thresholds in later time periods.…
Computer Simulation of State Electorates
Development of a model for estimating public opinion in the fifty states can have a major impact on research in comparative American state politics. Until now the major studies in this field of political science have generally used aggregate electoral data, demographic data, fiscal data, or elite attitudinal studies to analyze state politics and policymaking. The research reported here was designed to give impetus to attempts to use national surv…
