Exploring How Cannabis Use Featured in the Mental Health Experiences and Daily Lives of Queer, Non-Binary, and Trans Youth in the Early Phases of the Covid-19 Pandemic
While the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health and substance use inequities among youth, less is known about how queer, non-binary and transgender (QNT) youth in Canada experienced changes in cannabis use and mental health during the pandemic. This mixed-methods study explored the relationship between cannabis use, mental health, and experiences with the COVID-19-related public health measures among QNT youth. Between July 2020 and Jun…

The Effect of Sexual and Gender Minority Violence on Depression, Hazardous Drinking, Condom Use, and HIV Acquisition
Men Who Have Sex with Both Men and Women in West Africa
HIV is highly prevalent in men who have sex with men (MSM) in West Africa. Many MSM in the region also have sex with women (MSMW). Accordingly, they are a potential bridge subpopulation for HIV transmission to women. We aimed to evaluate the proportions and characteristics of West African MSMW at high behavioral risk of acquiring HIV from male partners and transmitting it to female partners (HBRMF). The cohort ANRS-12324 CohMSM Study included 630…
Opportunities and challenges for implementing drug checking services in British Columbia, Canada
Alongside structural reforms that address the underlying contextual factors that influence implementation (e.g., decriminalization of drugs, increased funding for DCS), centering community expertise throughout implementation is critical to the success of DCS. Our findings provide important insights into how BC can successfully implement systems-level harm reduction interventions and offer insights for other jurisdictions in their implementation o…
Acceptability of integrating mental health and substance use care within sexual health services among young sexual and gender minority men in Vancouver, Canada
Our findings highlight that SGM men's sexual health, mental health and substance use-related health needs and preferences are interrelated and should be addressed together. Tailored training and resources as well as structural adaptations to improve communication channels and collaborative connections between health providers are required to facilitate the development of integrated care for young SGM men
Knowledge gaps in existing research exploring sexual fluidity and mental health among young adults
While there is a large body of evidence indicating that sexual minority youth experience inequitably high rates of mental health problems (eg, depression, suicidality), we know little about how temporal changes in sexual attractions, identities and behaviour may impact mental health (and other) outcomes. In this essay, we review existing research regarding sexual fluidity and mental health among young adults in order to identify critical knowledg…
Moderation of the association between Covid-19-related income loss and depression by receipt of financial support
Association between income loss and depression was moderated by receipt of family/friends financial support but not by receipt of government financial support. Financial support interventions may help to mitigate the negative effects of income loss on young adults mental health during periods of economic crisis
Factors Associated with Self-Reported Changes in Alcohol Use among Young Adults during the Covid-19 Pandemic
While the COVID-19 pandemic impacted young adults' alcohol use patterns, little is known about how changes in alcohol use may differ across different settings. Our objective was to identify and compare factors associated with changes in alcohol use among young adults in Canada and France during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted an online cross-sectional survey in October-December 2020 with young adults aged 18-29 ( n = 5185) i…
Young Adults’ Mental Health and Unmet Service Needs in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic Across Canada and France
Cannabis use and mental health among young sexual and gender minority men
Individual and healthcare supply-related barriers to treatment initiation in HIV-positive patients enrolled in the Cameroonian antiretroviral treatment access programme
Increasing demand for antiretroviral treatment (ART) together with a reduction in international funding during the last decade may jeopardize access to ART. Using data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2014 in 19 HIV services in the Centre and Littoral regions in Cameroon, we investigated the role of healthcare supply-related factors in time to ART initiation in HIV-positive patients eligible for ART at HIV diagnosis. HIV service profile…
I want to feel young again”
Taking empowerment into account
Empowerment is an ongoing process through which individuals and communities appropriate power and acquire the capability to function autonomously. Research on empowerment in men who have sex with men (MSM) is lacking in community-based contexts. We investigated the relationship between willingness to be empowered and HIV care needs in West African MSM accessing community-based organisations' (CBO) services. Fifty-three interviews were administere…
