What’s the Emergency in Maternal Emergence? A Response to Hoskins-Murphy’s “Close to the Bone”
In response to Nicola Hoskins-Murphy’s paper, I wonder about the limitations of and contradictions embedded in the formulation of a maternal that requires foreclosure of a longed-for emergence of self and endless sacrifice in service of meeting the child’s needs, and I offer a framework for a meta-examination of the structures – mythological, psychoanalytic, political, historical, and economic – that shape such maternal formulations. I examine th…

Sparring with the Eternal Maternal Abject
Historically, mothers have not been able to tell their own story, due to either patriarchal exaltation/abjection of the maternal or the privileging of the child's experience of the maternal. The author finds herself reacting to Djurberg's depiction of the maternal experience as a woman who is a mother, not as a critic, theorist, or analyst, and wonders whether Djurberg has reenacted an abjection of the maternal or whether she is trying to awaken …
The Maternal Postmodern
In this discussion, I reflect on how Rozmarin's (this issue) experience as a mother leads her to reject the binaried formulation of maternal subjectivity as casualty of being-for-an-other in favor of a more postmodern formulation. By being less concerned with preserving boundaries and enunciative authority and more interested in describing a maternal subjectivity that is structured by the very interpermeated and often unnarratable experience of t…
"Lost in a Fog, or "How Difficult Is This Mommy Stuff, Anyway
Interpellation is not only a function of public life. It is also at home. Here Maura Sheehy works with Melissa, a young mother, who, just like her analyst, struggles with the multiple interpellations of motherhood. Abjected as well as idealized, motherhood produces both exaltation and utter confused misery for both. As the treatment proceeds, we witness analyst's and patient's common search for intelligibility, a parallel process in which the ana…
