    Open Access•Steven Botticelli•ARTICLE•Ideas.•2023•References: 3

  • The "Ethical Turn" in Psychoanalysis

    Steven Botticelli•ARTICLE•Studies in Gender and Sexuality•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 17

In the last decade there has been a great outburst of ethics upon the psychoanalytic scene, with the appearance of several books and many scholarly articles making a claim for a central role for ethics in our theorizing and practice. One might ask, Why now? In attempting to answer this question, the author considers the position of psychoanalytic therapists as “implicated subjects” (from Rothberg) within the neoliberal political economy, aware of…

    Open Access•Steven Botticelli•ARTICLE•Question•2021

  • Erections Exploding in Midair

Steven Botticelli•ARTICLE•Studies in Gender and Sexuality•2020

Building on earlier work that aimed to understand the traumatogenic effects of war experiences on soldiers, Chaim Shatan (1989) introduces in “Happiness Is a Warm Gun” his conception of “eroticized violence.” He provides examples from his work with soldiers that are at once lurid and disturbing, yet also elliptical. These examples by their excess reflect the (micro)traumatic impact of Shatan’s years of listening to soldiers’ accounts of their war…

  • My Freudian Cocaine Fantasia

Steven Botticelli•ARTICLE•Studies in Gender and Sexuality•2017

This paper speculates that Freud’s use of cocaine during the formative years of his theorizing shaped a particular conception of the nature of desire. One can draw correspondences between the phenomenology of cocaine intoxication and certain aspects of Freud’s ideas about desire: desire as appetitive, solipsistic, focused on discharge, defined by a quality of “drivenness,” subordinating of pleasure. Although relational reconsiderations have expan…

  • Danger, Pleasure, Vulnerability, Shame

Steven Botticelli•ARTICLE•Studies in Gender and Sexuality•2010

Hartman's and Blechner's responses to my essay highlight some illuminating differences with my own theoretical and clinical inclinations. In particular, Hartman's postmodernism and Blechner's empiricism allow me to clarify my own thinking, in particular the centrality of my concern with vulnerability. Sedgwick's challenge to my clinical case says much of interest about shame. It also permits me to address misunderstandings that can take place bet…

  • Thinking the Unthinkable

Steven Botticelli•ARTICLE•Studies in Gender and Sexuality•2010

This essay takes up the issue of anal sexuality among gay men in order to consider the relationship between bodily and psychic penetrability. The lack of recognition some gay men may experience with this aspect of their sexuality suggests the importance that feeling “mentalized” (e.g., Fonagy and Target, 1993 Fonagy , P. & Target , M. ( 1993 ). Aggression and the psychological self . International Journal of Psycho-Analysis , 74 , 471 – 485 .[Pub…
