Being the Brick: Notes Toward Thinking About the Clinical Utility of Trans Negativity
Unthinkable Anxieties
This article is adapted from a presentation the author gave at the Forty-Ninth Congress of the International Psychoanalytical Association in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2015. The author offers a reading of transphobic countertransference through a century of psychoanalytic literature on transgender patients, from Freud's applied analysis on the case of Schreber to today's relational trans-affirmative psychoanalysts. Through this reading, the author…
The Masculine Vaginal: Working With Queer Men’s Embodiment at the Transgender Edge
Turning away from the conspicuous phenomena of transgender experience, with an eye toward locating and illuminating the transgender edge in cisgender, this paper explores the relationship between men and the Vaginal, both material and fantasized. Positing the Vaginal as a counterpart to the Phallic allows a delinkage of vaginal psychic and embodied states from the strictly female so that, like the Phallic, they can be accessed by people of all ge…
Trans/Virtual: The Anxieties of Transsexual and Electronic Embodiments
The transsexual body, modified with medical technology, enters the realm of the unreal as it destabilizes notions of binary sex and gender. It can be, for many anxious viewers of it, a body in opposition to nature. Anxieties about the real versus the virtual also arise in relation to cyberspace. This paper, originally written as an oral PowerPoint presentation, explores the places where transgender physicality, cyberspace, and anxiety intersect, …
Hysterectomy and Oophorectomy Experiences of Female-to-Male Transgender Individuals
This study surveyed 134 female-to-male transgendered individuals (FtMs) in order to obtain information about their experience of hysterectomy and oophorectomy. The survey was designed to explore motivation for undergoing surgery, access to care, surgical complications, postoperative changes, and use of standards of care. The survey was distributed at transgender conferences and online via transgender email lists and Web sites. Results demonstrate…
The Middle Men: An Introduction to the Transmasculine Identities
Little attention has been paid to the transmasculine (female-to-male [FTM] transsexual and transgender) community. When we hear the word transsexual, most of us immediately think of male-to-females. However, the FTM community is thriving and rich with variety. This essay provides an inside look at the little-examined identities within the almost invisible world of FTMs. Positing that the transmasculine community does not subscribe to just one mod…
Sexual TNT: A transman tells the truth about testosterone
The following autobiographical essay covers the events and emotions of the author's first week on testosterone in July of 1995, when, at the age of 24, he began his journey from female to male. In the years since, the number of female-to-male transsexuals (FTMs, transmen, etc.) has grown considerably and many of them seek counseling and support from social service agencies and private practitioners, especially in the early days of their transitio…
