Parents’ Educational Background and Child’s Learned Skills Are More Predictive for a Positive School Career than Earlier Parenting Behavior or Child’s Mental Health—Results from an 18-Year Longitudina…
Background/Objectives : Developmental research has shown that mental health and functioning is determined by social background and child and family characteristics. Until now, there have been few longitudinal studies which considered several aspects at the same time and observed children's development over ten or more years. Methods : The aim of this 18-year-longitudinal study is to find out to which degree different child, family, and socioecono…
Young adults with migration background: Mental health problems, risk behaviour, and educational and occupational development. Results of an 18-year longitudinal study
The few German studies on children, adolescents, and young adults with a migration background (MB) suggest a slightly greater burden compared to those without an MB. This difference is likely influenced by risk factors such as poorer living conditions and lower socio-economic status (SES). This study compares children with and without an MB (N = 316) at three assessment points over 18 years regarding mental health problems, substance use behaviou…
Interparental Relationship Adjustment, Parenting, and Offspring’s Cigarette Smoking at the 10‐Year Follow‐up
Familial influences on children’s cigarette smoking have been established, yet little is known about whether these influences in childhood relate to offspring’s smoking behavior in adolescence. Drawing on prior work showing that children’s emotional and behavioral problems (i.e., internalizing and externalizing behavior problems) are influenced by both interparental and parent–child relationships, we examined whether children’s emotional and beha…

Ten Hypotheses about Tolerance toward Minorities among Latin American Adolescents
Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, race, mental and/or physical disability, religious background, HIV/AIDS status, and ethnic origin affects the well-being of minorities and society in general. Recent research in North America underscores the importance of contact with diverse networks, intergroup discussions, a social dominance orientation, religious beliefs, and the school climate, among other factors, to explain tolerance for…
The Reference Group Effect: An Explanation of the Paradoxical Relationship Between Academic Achievement and Self-Confidence Across Countries
Academic self-concept and achievement are positively related among students from the same school and country. Yet negative associations between these variables may be found at the level of schools and countries. In the present article, we propose how this apparent paradox can be explained in terms of reference group effects, in which high standards, norms, or benchmarks act to decrease academic self-concept, whereas low ones have the contrary eff…
