Speech Perception
Perceiving Prosody from the Face and Voice
We examined the processing of potential auditory and visual cues that differentiate statements from echoic questions. In Experiment 1, four natural speech statement-question pairs were identified by participants, and then analyzed to determine which characteristics were ecologically valid. These characteristics were tested in subsequent experiments to determine if they were also functionally valid. In Experiment 2, the characteristics of the most…
The processing of information from multiple sources in simultaneous interpreting
Language processing is influenced by multiple sources of information. We examined whether the performance in simultaneous interpreting would be improved when providing two sources of information, the auditory speech as well as corresponding lip-movements, in comparison to presenting the auditory speech alone. Although there was an improvement in sentence recognition when presented with visible speech, there was no difference in performance betwee…
Information processing and a computational approach to the study of simultaneous interpretation
We begin by describing some challenges to psychological inquiry and to the understanding of simultaneous interpretation. We then articulate the computational and hypothesis-testing approach to inquiry, and illustrate a general information-processing model. We discuss some experimental and theoretical studies of language processing carried out within the information-processing approach. We analyze not only behavioral measures of language processin…
Bimodal speech perception
Perceptual development and auditory backward recognition masking
Three amplitude-discrimination experiments within a backward masking task were carried out to study whether young children have a slower rate of perceptual processing than do adults. Rate of processing was defined within an explicit model of perceptual performance that allows the investigator to determine if rate is responsible for developmental differences in auditory discrimination. A developmental difference in discrimination ability was compe…
