  • Co-Speech Movement in Conversational Turn-Taking

Open Access•Samantha Gordon Danner, Jelena Krivokapić et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2021

This study investigates co-speech movements as a function of the conversational turn exchange type, the type of speech material at a turn exchange, and the interlocutor’s role as speaker or listener. A novel interactive protocol that mixes conversation and (non-read) nursery rhymes works to elicit many speech turns and co-speech movements within dyadic speech interaction. To evaluate a large amount of data, we use the density of co-speech movemen…

  • Quantitative analysis of multimodal speech data

Open Access•Samantha Gordon Danner, Adriano Vilela Barbosa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 39

This study presents techniques for quantitatively analyzing coordination and kinematics in multimodal speech using video, audio and electromagnetic articulography (EMA) data. Multimodal speech research has flourished due to recent improvements in technology, yet gesture detection/annotation strategies vary widely, leading to difficulty in generalizing across studies and in advancing this field of research. We describe how FlowAnalyzer software ca…

  • Selectional Effects in Allomorph Competition

    Open Access•Samantha Gordon Danner•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2016

This paper uses English demonyms – the name for inhabitants of a particular region, such as Californian or Icelander – to investigate a combination of phonological and non-phonological factors that drive conditioned allomorphy. A corpus study of English demonyms found that hypothesized phonological conditioning factors of demonym allomorphy such as base stress and base syllable count did not fully account for alternation in demonym allomorphy. In…
