  • The Influence of Precursive Sequences on the Perception of Synthesized Vowels

    Open Access•W A Ainsworth•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1974•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The duration of a vowel sound can influence the way in which it is categorized by listeners, especially if the formant frequencies are such as to render the identity of the vowel ambiguous. It is possible, however, that the durations of speech sounds are not perceived absolutely but, rather, relative to the durations of the sounds which precede them. An experiment has been performed to test this hypothesis. It was found that the classification of…

  • The Effect of Relative Formant Amplitude on the Perceived Identity of Synthetic Vowels

    Open Access•W A Ainsworth, J Bruce Millar•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1972•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The perceptual effect of varying the relative amplitude of the formants in two-formant synthetic vowels has been investigated. It was found that as the amplitude of the second formant was reduced the identity of each sound was firstly independent of the relative amplitude, then became ambiguous and finally changed to that of a vowel of correct first formant frequency. These experiments were performed with isolated vowel sounds of 240 and 480 msec…

  • Methodology of Experiments on the Perception of Synthesized Vowels

    Open Access•W A Ainsworth, J Bruce Millar•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1971•Cited by: 4•References: 5

A method of checking the reference frames of listeners during experiments concerned with the perception of synthetic vowels has been evaluated. The checking was achieved by interpersing standard vowels in a sequence of experimental vowels. It was found that the responses to the standard vowels were substantially independent of the quality of the experimental vowels with which they were included. Most of the listeners, however, were unable to dist…

  • Perception of Stop Consonants in Synthetic CV Syllables

    Open Access•W A Ainsworth•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1968•Cited by: 1•References: 11

A method of synthesizing stop consonants in CV syllables has been investigated. The data from a perception experiment have been analysed in such a way that the importance of various acoustic features for the perception of stops in front of each of twelve English vowels has been estimated. The results indicate that the conclusions of previous investigators, namely that formant transitions are the main cues for voiced stops and noise burst frequenc…
