Perception of American–English Vowels by Early and Late Spanish–English Bilinguals
Increasing numbers of Hispanic immigrants are entering the US and learning American–English (AE) as a second language (L2). Previous studies investigating the relationship between AE and Spanish vowels have revealed an advantage for early L2 learners for their accuracy of L2 vowel perception. Replicating and extending such previous research, this study examined the patterns with which early and late Spanish–English bilingual adults assimilated na…
Neurophysiological indices of the effect of cognates on vowel perception in late Spanish-English bilinguals
Perceptual Confusions of American-English Vowels and Consonants by Native Arabic Bilinguals
This study investigated the perception of American-English (AE) vowels and consonants by young adults who were either (a) early Arabic-English bilinguals whose native language was Arabic or (b) native speakers of the English dialects spoken in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where both groups were studying. In a closed-set format, participants were asked to identify 12 AE vowels presented in /hVd/ context and 20 AE consonants (C) in three vocalic…
Perception of French vowels by American English adults with and without French language experience
The Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire
This paper describes 2 studies that evaluated a new instrument, the Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire-Community Version (PEDQ-CV). The PEDQ-CV can be used across ethnic groups to assess perceived racism or ethnic discrimination. The scales measure several subdimensions of racism, permitting the examination of different forms of this race-related stressor. The first study evaluated the psychometric properties of the PEDQ-CV in a large …
Neurolinguistic aspects of bilingualism
To study the brain regions and networks that underlie knowledge of more than one language, neurolinguists have traditionally compared what is impaired with what is spared in the language disturbance of aphasia. The sizable literature on polyglot aphasia suggests left-hemisphere dominance for all the languages of most polyglots. Supporting evidence comes from the literature studying lateral dominance in non-brain-damaged bilingual participants and…
