Dialect change and language attitudes in Albania
This study is concerned with attitudes of Albanian listeners toward the two main dialects spoken in Albania: Gheg and Tosk. The study seeks to establish a connection between attitudes and speech features which have been shown to be changing in Gheg, and other features found to be stable. Ratings of four speech features on visual analog scales (VASs) pertaining to dialect identification, status, and solidarity were collected from 125 Albanian list…
Using Mahalanobis Distances to Investigate Second Dialect Acquisition: A Study on Quebec French
Second dialect acquisition (SDA) can be defined as the process through which geographically mobile individuals adapt to new dialect features of their first language. Two common methodological approaches in SDA studies could lead to underestimating the phonetic changes that mobile speakers may experience: only large phonetic differences between dialects are considered, and external sources are used to infer what should have been the speakers’ orig…
A dynamic model of the change from pre- to post-aspiration in Andalusian Spanish
In Andalusian Spanish, there is a well-documented sound change in which pre- has become post-aspiration in sequences of /s/ followed by voiceless stops. Here we investigate acoustically its synchronic basis across two age groups and two different regions of Andalusia that differ in the degree to which the sound change has advanced. For this purpose, Functional Principal Component Analysis (FPCA) was applied to the probability of voicing and to th…
