The nature of individual differences in field dependence
In Memory of Herman A. Witkin (1916-1979)
Psychological differentiation
The status of the differentiation hypothesis, derived from differentiation theory, is examined in light of the evidence that has accumulated since the hypothesis was proposed a decade and a half ago. Assuming that greater or less differentiation is an organismic attribute, the hypothesis postulates that behaviors reflecting extent of differentiation are likely to be interrelated, making for self-consistency in individual functioning across domain…
The role of conversational passing moves in the management of topical transitions∗
Field dependence and interpersonal behavior
People with a field-dependent or field-independent cognitive style are different in their interpersonal behavior in ways predicted from the theory of psychological differentiation. Field-dependent people make greater use of external social referents, but only when the situation is ambiguous and these referents provide information that helps remove the ambiguity; field-independent people function with greater autonomy from others under such condit…
Dream recall and dream recall failure
The role of individual differences in field dependence as a factor in learning and memory
Several studies suggest that field-dependent drivers may have more accidents than field-independent drivers. However, much more research is needed to specify the nature o f the driver behaviors involved. In this report several hypotheses are considered concerning how fild-dependent and field-independent drivers may differ in response to developing emergen-cies and with respect to defensive behaviors. Methodological problems involved in tesf ing t…
Psychological differentiation as a factor in conflict resolution
Previous studies have shown that persons matched in level of differentiation are likely to develop greater interpersonal attraction in the course of an interaction than are mismatched persons. These studies were all conducted in situations where the interacting persons were working toward a common goal. To test the hypothesis that situational variables may moderate match-mismatch effects, the present study investigated these affects when the inte…
Stability of cognitive style from childhood to young adulthood
Alcoholism and Psychological Differentiation
Gradual Arousal from Sleep
Reports that subjects have been “thinking” rather than dreaming are given more often after gradual awakenings than after abrupt awakenings. The effect of the method of awakening was relatively pronounced among Ss who rarely recall dreaming (at home) and absent among Ss who usually do. It was also pronounced when Ss were awakened from late rapid-eye-movement periods of the night, and absent for early ones. Some evidence was also found to support t…
Dream reporting following abrupt and gradual awakenings from different types of sleep
Dream Recall as a Function of Method of Awakening
Eleven subjects were awakened from dream periods (defined in terms of Dement and Kleitman's eye-movement criteria) and asked to describe their dream experience. Subjects more often believed that they were awake and/or thinking when the awakening was gradual than when the awakening was abrupt (P <.05). Reports in which the subject believed that he had been awakened from a dreamless sleep were more frequent for the first several eye-movement period…
